I LOVE going to the Outback and ordering this side with my steak. I could eat these alone! This is a copycat recipe; one I have had saved but have yet to try. But if this recipe is a true copycat of what I have eaten at Outback, you will not be sorry!

1 (10 1/2 ounce) can beef broth
1/2 cup onion, diced
2 (16 ounce) cans small whole mushrooms, like button mushrooms (plus the juice of one can or jar)
1/3 cup Burgundy wine

Steps:

  • Place beef broth in a saucepan and simmer onion for 15 minutes.
  • Add mushrooms, along with juice from 1 can or jar and wine.
  • Simmer another 15 minutes.
  • Serve with steak.

8 oz. whole fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 cup buttermilk
cooking oil

Steps:

  • a large bag, mix the flour, mustard, paprika pepper and salt. Place buttermilk into a bowl and dip a few mushrooms at a time. Place the mushrooms in the bag with the mixture. Shake the bag to coat the mushrooms. Heat 2 to 3 inches of oil in a deep fryer or saucepan to 375 degrees. Fry several mushrooms at a time until they turn golden brown on all sides.

  • Combine whole-wheat flour, dry mustard, paprika, black pepper, and salt in a large ziplock bag. Alternatively, you can use a regular bowl or a paper bag when mixing the ingredients.
  • Place the buttermilk in a bowl. Dip the mushrooms at a time.
  • Place the mushrooms in the bag with the mixture.
  • Shake the bag to coat the mushrooms.
  • Heat 2 to 3 inches of oil in a deep fryer or saucepan at 375 degrees F.
  • Fry several mushrooms at a time until they turn golden brown on all sides.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

  • Saute onions in butter or olive oil until translucent. Add beef broth and onions ito a saucepan. Simmer on low about 15 minutes. Add mushrooms with juice from jar and wine. Simmer additional 15 minutes.
