PAPIER-MâCHé BOWL

This Papier-Mâché bowl is made at home with easy to find ingredients.

Provided by Betty Crocker Kitchens

Number Of Ingredients 6

Ingredients

Petroleum jelly
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cold water
Newspaper, torn into about 3x1-inch to 5x1-inch strips
Tempera paint (your favorite color)
Clear sealing spray for crafts, if you like

Steps:

Put the bowl upside down. Spread a thick layer of petroleum jelly over the outside and rim of bowl.
Put the flour and water in the mixing bowl. Beat with the wire whisk until smooth.
Dip 1 newspaper strip at a time into paste. Pull strip between 2 fingers to take off extra paste. Put wet paper strips on outside of bowl in an up-and-down pattern, covering all of bowl.
Dip more paper strips into paste. Add a second layer of newspaper strips to bowl, putting them crosswise over the first layer of strips.
Dip more newspaper strips into paste. Add 4 more layers of newspaper strips to bowl, first going up and down, then going across. Let dry for 24 hours.
Take the papier-mâché bowl off the regular bowl, using a knife to loosen around the edge. Paint inside and outside of papier-mâché bowl with the tempera paint. Let dry.
Spray the sealing spray on bowl to keep it longer. Store paste in a covered container in the refrigerator up to 5 days.

3 cups water
1 1/2 cups flour
3 drops peppermint oil

Steps:

In a saucepan mix together flour and paste over medium heat until thick and creamy.
Cool.
Add Peppermint oil.
Dip strips of newspaper, or paper bags into this mix.
Rub off excess mixter.
Place on form one layer at a time, and let dry.
(Rip paper, don't cut it for best results).

I was putting up wallpaper a few days ago and the darn stuff wouldn't adhere to the wall even tho it was prepasted! I made and used this, and it worked great. I love this stuff! I did use just half the recipe on my small project and it was easy and worked well.

1 1/2 cups white flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon alum
1 cup cold water
2 cups boiling water

Steps:

Combine flour and sugar.
Slowly add the cold water and beat it until no lumps remain.
Add the boiling water, stirring constantly, bring the mixture to a boil.
When it is stiff, remove from the heat and add alum.
Store in an air-tight container.
Note: If need be, it can be softened by adding small amounts of warm water until desired consistency is achieved.

Steps:

COMBINE THE FLOUR AND SUGAR. ADD A BIT OF WARM WATER TO MAKE A THICK PASTE. SLOWLY ADD THE REST OF THE WATER, STIRRING WITH EACH ADDITION. BOIL STIRRING CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL THE MIXTURE IS THICK AND CLEAR OR MICROWAVE THE MIXTURE AT THIGH FOR 2 MINUTES, STIR AND MICROWAVE AGAIN AT HIGH SETTING FOR 2 MINUTES. ADD THE OIL OF CINNAMON.
