President George W. Bush's Former Personal Chef Says the Bushes Loved These Biscuits and Your Family Will Too image

Matthew Wendel, the former personal chef of President George W. Bush, says the Bushes loved these spicy, cheesy biscuits.

Yield 3 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 11

Ingredients

5 cups flour
3 Tbsp sugar
5 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
3 jalapeño peppers, seeded and chopped
1 cup butter-flavored shortening (such as Crisco)
2 cups buttermilk
1 pkg active dry yeast
5 Tbsp warm water

Steps:

Preheat oven to 450°F. In a large bowl, sift together first 5 ingredients. Stir in cheese and jalapeños. With a pastry cutter, cut in shortening until dough is pea size. Stir in buttermilk. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water; let stand several minutes. Add to dough, mixing lightly. Turn dough onto a well-floured surface; knead lightly. Roll out ½ to ¾ inch thick. Use a 2½-inch biscuit cutter to cut biscuits. Bake on a greased cookie sheet 10-12 minutes.
