Water Pie is a depression era recipe that turns bare bones ingredients into a delicious buttery pie!

1 9-inch deep-dish pie crust, unbaked
1 1/2 cups water ((that is one and a half cups))
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
5 tablespoons butter, cut into 5 pieces

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 and set empty pie crust on a baking sheet.
  • Pour 1 + 1/2 cups water into the pie crust.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the flour and sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the water in the crust. Don't stir.
  • Drizzle the vanilla over the water in the pie crust. Place pats of butter on top of this.
  • Bake at 400 for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 and cover sides of crust if needed to prevent burning. Continue cooking for an additional 30 minutes.
  • Pie will be watery when you pull it out of the oven but will gel as it cools. Allow to cool completely and then cover and place in the fridge until chilled before cutting.

Number Of Ingredients 7

9" deep dish frozen pie crust (do not defrost) - I used a regular pie crust, which was fine
the deep dish would probably lead to fewer spills
12-ounce can of Sprite
1/4 cup flour
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
5 tablespoons butter, grated (keep in the fridge or freezer after grating so that it's easier to handle)

Steps:

  • Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees
  • line a baking sheet with foil or parchment and place the pie crust on it.
  • Pour the Sprite into the crust.
  • Stir the flour and sugar together and sprinkle slowly over the Sprite. Add the vanilla.
  • Sprinkle the grated butter evenly over.
  • Cover the pie with a piece of foil and tuck the edges under. Cut an "X" into the center and peel back the foil so that the crust edges are covered. Bake for 30 minutes.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes. Cool the pie on the baking sheet on a wire rack, then place in the fridge to finish setting up Cut into wedges and serve.
