Yummy and less work than the real cabbage rolls. There is no rice in this recipe, because I don't like rice in my cabbage rolls.

1 -1 1/2 lb lean ground turkey or 1 -1 1/2 lb extra lean ground beef
2 cups chopped onions
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1/4-1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 small head green cabbage, coarsely chopped
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce, can add another 8- 15 oz if you like more sauce

Steps:

  • Spary crock pot with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Crumble the raw ground turkey (or beef) and spread along bottom of crock pot.
  • Add the onions, green pepper, garlic, salt, pepper, thyme and cabbage.
  • Pour the diced tomatoes over top.
  • Mix the sugar into the tomato sauce and pour over everything. If you like more sauce, add another 8-oz or 15-oz can of tomato sauce.
  • Cover and cook on low for about 8 hours or on high for about 4 hours.
  • When done, remove lid and stir to mix well.

A simple "unstuffed" cabbage roll recipe made with ground beef, rice, a hearty tomato sauce, and shredded cabbage

1 1/2 pound ground beef
2 medium onions, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 can (7.5 ounce size) tomato sauce
1 cup water
1 can (10 ounce size) condensed tomato soup
1/2 cup long grain rice, uncooked
4 cups shredded green cabbage
1/3 cup tomato juice

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring, until the beef is no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease and return the pan to the heat. Add the tomato sauce, water, and half of the tomato soup to the skillet. Mix well then stir in the rice. In the crock pot, layer half of the meat mixture then half of the shredded cabbage; repeat the layers. In a bowl, combine the remaining tomato soup with the tomato juice until blended. Drizzle over the top layer of cabbage in the crock pot. Cover the crock and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours. Serve hot.

1 large head cabbage
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
3/4 cup quick-cooking rice
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup crushed saltines (about 15 crackers)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 ounce onion soup mix
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90% lean)
1 can (46 ounces) V8 juice
Salt to taste
Grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Steps:

  • Cook cabbage in boiling water just until leaves fall off head. Set aside 12 large leaves for rolls; drain well. (Refrigerate remaining cabbage for another use.) Cut out the thick vein from the bottom of each reserved leaf, making a V-shaped cut; set aside., In a large bowl, combine the tomato sauce, rice, green pepper, cracker crumbs, egg and soup mix. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. , Place about 1/3 cup meat mixture on each cabbage leaf; overlap cut ends of leaf. Fold in sides, beginning from the cut end. Roll up completely to enclose filling. Secure with toothpicks if desired., Place cabbage rolls in a 3-qt. slow cooker. Pour V8 juice over rolls. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or until filling reaches 160°. Just before serving, sprinkle with salt and cheese if desired.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 ½ pounds ground beef
2 onions, chopped
1 cup water
1 (14 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
½ cup white rice
4 cups shredded cabbage
8 slices bacon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease an 8x12-inch baking dish.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef until crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and discard any excess grease. Stir in onions, water, tomato sauce, garlic, salt and black pepper; bring to a simmer. Add rice, cover, and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Spread half the shredded cabbage in prepared baking dish; cover with half the beef mixture. Repeat layers. Arrange bacon over final layer of beef. Cover baking dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in preheated oven until bacon is crisp and cabbage is tender, about 1 1/2 hours.

2 pounds ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
3 ½ pounds chopped cabbage
1 cup uncooked white rice
1 teaspoon salt
2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large skillet, brown beef in oil over medium high heat until redness is gone. Drain off fat.
  • In a large mixing bowl combine the onion, tomato sauce, cabbage, rice and salt. Add meat and mix all together. Pour mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour broth over meat mixture and bake in the preheated oven, covered, for 1 hour. Stir, replace cover and bake for another 30 minutes.

1 cup tomato soup, divided
1/2 cup long grain rice
4 cups shredded cabbage
1/3 cup tomato juice

Steps:

  • In a large skillet brown together the beef, onion, garlic, salt and pepper.
  • Cook to done.
  • Drain.
  • Add to this the tomato sauce, 1/2 can of soup and mix well.
  • Add the rice and water and mix well.
  • In your crock pot layer 1/2 meat mixture, 1/2 cabbage.
  • Repeat.
  • Mix together the remaining soup and tomato juice.
  • Slowly pour over mixture in crock.
  • Cook on high for 4-6 hours, or low for 8-10 hours.

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.   • Prepare your slow cooker with a light coating of cooking spray. Sprinkle 3 cups of your chopped cabbage all across the bottom of your slow cooker.
  • In a large skillet, over medium to medium high heat, cook bacon until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove bacon and place on a paper towel lined plate. You are not finished with this pan, do not clean it yet. Set bacon aside.
  • Next, half wipe out your skillet with paper towel so only a few tablespoons of bacon grease remain inside your skillet. Add onion, ground meat, garlic and pepper. Cook until ground meat is cooked and no longer pink. Onions should be tender. Drain in a colander in the sink to remove as much grease as possible. Dump your meat mixture on top of the cabbage in your slow cooker.
  • Now sprinkle your rice on top of the meat mixture. Then sprinkle your crisp bacon on top of the rice. Sprinkle remaining cabbage on top of the bacon.
