- Place onions and butter in a 1-1/2-qt. slow cooker coated with cooking spray. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or until onions are tender. Stir in the broth, sherry and pepper. Cover and cook 2-3 hours longer or until heated through. , Ladle soup into ovenproof bowls. Top each with a slice of toast and a slice of cheese. Broil 4-6 in. from the heat for 2-3 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve immediately.

- Place butter in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Top with sweet and red onions; sprinkle with pepper. Cook, covered, on low until onions are tender, 5-6 hours., Stir in broth, water, wine, herbs and Worcestershire sauce. Cook, covered, on low until flavors are blended, 2-3 hours. Remove herb sprigs and bay leaf., To serve, preheat broiler. Place bread on a baking sheet; broil 4 in. from heat until lightly toasted, 1-2 minutes per side. - Heat butter in a large, heavy pot over medium-high heat; cook and stir onions until they become translucent, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle onions with sugar; reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring constantly, until onions are soft and browned, at least 30 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Stir sherry into onion mixture and scrape bottom of pot to dissolve small bits of browned food from the pot. Transfer onions into a slow cooker and pour in beef broth. Season to taste with sea salt; stir in thyme and bay leaf. Cover cooker, set on High, and cook 4 to 6 hours. If desired, set on Low and cook 8 to 10 hours.
- About 10 minutes before serving, set oven rack about 8 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven's broiler. Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet.
- Broil bread slices until toasted, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
- Combine Gruyere, Emmental, Parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses in a bowl, tossing lightly. Fill oven-safe soup crocks 3/4 full of onion soup and float a bread slice in each bowl. Top with about 2 tablespoons of cheese mixture per serving.
- Place filled bowls onto a baking sheet and broil until cheese topping is lightly browned and bubbling, about 2 minutes.

Love that this soup cooks all day in a slow cooker! It does take some prep work, but the taste is well worth it!

Steps:
- In a large skillet on medium-high heat, melt butter. Add in onions and cook until see-through, stirring frequently (It takes about 10 minutes).
- Add in sugar, and reduce heat to medium. Stir the onions constantly, caramelizing them. It will take about 20-30 minutes.
- Add in the minced garlic and apple cider, and stir until warmed through.
- Transfer the onions to the slow cooker and add in beef broth and thyme. Cook on low for 6-8 hours.
- Before serving, place the french bread slices on a baking sheet and broil in the oven for 1-2 minutes (just until browned).
- In a small bowl, mix together the three cheeses.
- Pour soup in oven-safe bowls (the soup will serve 6-8), place a piece of french bread in each bowl, and then top each with a portion of cheese. Place each bowl on the cookie sheet, and broil for 2 more minutes, until the cheese starts to melt and brown.
- Serve hot.

- Place Reynolds™ Slow Cooker Liners inside a 5- to 6 1/2 -qt slow cooker bowl. Make sure that liner fits snugly against the bottom and sides of bowl and pull the top of the liner over rim of bowl.
- In lined slow cooker, mix onions and margarine.
- Cover and cook on high heat setting 30 to 35 minutes or until onions begin to slightly brown around edges.

- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir sweet onion and red onion in melted butter until softened, about 10 minutes. Cook and stir garlic into onion mixture until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a slow cooker.

- In a large pot over medium-low heat, heat olive oil and add butter. Once the butter is melted, stir the onions and coat with oil and butter.
- Cover and cook for 20 minutes, checking occasionally.
- Turn up the heat to medium-high. Add ½ tsp salt and sugar. Stir and keep cooking until onions are brown and caramelized. (the bottom of the pan will develop some browning, it's very important!)
- Stir in flour one tablespoon at a time and cook for about 30 seconds.
- Preheat Oven To 325˚F (160˚C).
- Add 1 cup (235 ml) of the beef broth. Use a whisk to scrape up (deglaze) the browned bits stuck on the bottom of the pan.
- Add the remaining five cups of beef stock, wine, sage and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 40 minutes.
- In the meantime, cut the french bread or baguette into ½ inch (10 mm) thick pieces. Brush with oil on both sides and bake at 325˚F (160˚C) for 30 minutes, flipping halfway. Once they are done, increase oven temperature to 350˚F (175˚C).
- Add optional ingredients.
- In an oven safe bowl, pour the onion soup, filling about ¾ of the way full. Top with a piece of baked french bread, and generously sprinkle swiss and parmesan on top.
- Bake for two to three minutes or until the cheese has melted completely and become slightly golden.
