I try to serve a fruit dish with every breakfast to get some extra vitamins in our diet. Not only are these pears quick and easy to prepare, they're delicious!

1 can (16 ounces) pear halves
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Drain pears, reserving syrup; set the pears aside. In a small saucepan, combine the syrup, brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add pears and simmer for about 5 minutes more or until heated through.

⅓ cup brown sugar
⅓ cup water
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
3 large pears, peeled, halved, and cored
⅓ cup walnuts, finely chopped
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 ½ tablespoons brandy
1 tablespoon plain yogurt
1 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons brandy, sherry, or other liqueur

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Mix 1/3 cup brown sugar with water and lemon juice together in an ungreased baking dish until sugar is dissolved. Arrange pear halves, core side down, in the dish, and baste with the sauce. Cover with aluminum foil.
  • Bake pears in the preheated oven for 20 - 25 minutes, or until fork-tender but not mushy.
  • Meanwhile, mix nuts together with the remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons brandy, and the yogurt; set aside. In a separate bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks form. Sprinkle in white sugar and remaining 2 teaspoons of brandy, or liqueur of choice, and gently whip a few strokes more.
  • To serve, place one pear half in the center of each serving plate and fill core cavity with nut stuffing. Top with whipped cream. Serve warm.

1/2 cup brandy
3 Asian Pears (sliced and cored)
2 cups vodka
1 cup sugar
1/4 dried orange peel
1/4 cup grated ginger

Steps:

  • Add all the ingredients to a 1 quart canning jar. Screw on lid tightly. Label jar with name of recipe and date batch is started. Shake jar vigorously and place in a temperature controlled area away from light. The next day turn the jar upside down so the jar is sitting on its lid. (See why you should screw the lid down tightly?) The following day, invert jar again. Repeat this procedure every day for 3 months, turning the jar so that the ingredients slowly filter from the top of the jar to the bottom of the jar. At the end of 3 months, strain the ingredients through a cheesecloth. Let the remaining liquid sit in a covered container overnight. Strain the remaining liquid a 2nd time. Bottle your Spiced Asian Pear Brandy and enjoy!

  • Pour the brandy, lemon juice, simple syrup, and pear nectar into a cocktail shaker over ice. Cover, and shake until the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled martini glass to serve.

In this reciped, she uses "sah leh" (sand pears) and recommends substituting Bosc pears, but I have done this with Asian pears, specifically Hosui or Niitaka. The desirable characteristic is a hard, crisp fruit. This is a wonderful appetizer or amuse bouche ... You can either pickle the pears whole, or for an appetizer, you can julienne them.

1 1/3 cups Chinese white rice vinegar (can substitute distilled vinegar ( cider vinegar not recommended (adds too much apple flaovor)
1 1/3 cups water
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt

Steps:

  • Peel, wash, and dry the pears (julienne if you choose to -- ).
  • Place all the remaining ingredients in an oversize glass jar.
  • Mix well (non-metallic utensil, wood preferred) to ensure all the ingredients are dissolved.
  • Add the pears to the jar, mix again, and cover tightly.
  • Keep in refrigerator, undisturbed, for at least 3 days before use.
  • These pears will keep refrigerated for at least 6 months.
