SPICY MEXICAN-STYLE BLOODY MARY MIX RECIPE



Spicy Mexican-Style Bloody Mary Mix Recipe image

Make your own Bloody Mary Mix with this homemade Mexican-style recipe, which incorporates fresh roasted tomatoes, roasted jalapeno peppers, Mexican oregano, plenty of spicy seasonings and so much more. Packed with flavor.

2.5-3 pounds Heirloom Tomatoes (we used Cherokee Purple and Black Krim)
2 jalapeno peppers
1/2 head garlic
1 small onion (chopped)
1 stalk celery (chopped)
1 teaspoon olive oil
1-2/3 cup water (1-2 cups as needed to get right consistency)
2/3 cup red wine vinegar (1/3 cup to 2/3 cup to get right consistency)
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
½ teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon Spanish paprika
Juice from 1 lime

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • Slice the heirloom tomatoes in half and lay them onto a lightly oiled baking sheet, skin sides up.
  • Slice the jalapeno peppers in half lengthwise and lay on the baking sheet, skin sides up.
  • Wrap the head of garlic in aluminum foil with a splash of olive oil and dash of salt and set onto the baking sheet.
  • Roast 30-35 minutes until the pepper skins are nicely charred.
  • While tomatoes and peppers are roasting, heat a large pot to medium heat and add olive oil.
  • Add onion and celery and cook about 5 minutes to soften.
  • Remove tomatoes, peppers and garlic and cool slightly.
  • Peel the tomatoes and peppers and squeeze the garlic form their skins. Add it all to the large pot.
  • With the heat on low, add remaining ingredients except lime and stir.
  • Bring to a light boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add lime juice and stir.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Cool slightly and strain. A food mill works great here to remove the bulky solids.

6 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced (juices reserved)
3 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 garlic cloves, minced
3 teaspoons hot sauce (such as Crystal)
2 teaspoons horseradish, minced fresh
2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon pepper, fresh ground
6 ounces vodka
coarse salt
6 green beans, pickled (or 6 stalks celery with leaves, for garnish)

Steps:

  • Blend the tomatoes, lemon and lime juice, Worcestershire, garlic, hot sauce, horseradish, salt, Old Bay, celery seed and pepper until smooth. Cover and chill until needed. This recipe makes 6 to 7 cups, depending on the size of the tomatoes; the mix will keep for 1 week.
  • To assemble 6 servings:.
  • In a pitcher, combine the mix and vodka.
  • If desired, dampen the rims of 6 old-fashioned glasses and dip them in coarse salt. Fill each glass halfway with ice, then divide the Bloody Marys among them.
  • Garnish each with a pickled bean or celery stalk, and serve.

I made gallons and gallons of this stuff during Mardi Gras in the French Quarter this year. It's delightfully spicy and flavorful without being over powered with heat.

1 (64 ounce) container tomato juice
2 tablespoons creole seasoning
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon horseradish
1 teaspoon steak sauce
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
1/2 lemon, juice of

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher or jug of some sort until the creole seasoning is completely dissolved. I like to use an empty gallon jug or something with a top so I can shake all the ingredients together. You can use right away, but I prefer to let it sit in the fridge and "mingle" for a few hours.
  • When making drinks with the mix try rimming your glasses with creole seasoning. Pickled green beans, pickled okra, lemon, lime and of course an olive make for a wonderfully garnished spicy cajun mary.
  • You can always add more or less creole seasoning and tabasco to taste.
  • Make sure to have extra tomato juice on hand to "dilute" to people's personal taste preference. I sometimes had to add half mix and half juice for my customers who couldn't handle the heat.

  • Combine all ingredients in a 2-quart pitcher.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator.
  • Directions for mixing drink: Add 3 parts of the Spicy Bloody Mary Mix to 1 part vodka, gin, rum or tequila, over ice.
  • This Spicy Bloody Mary Mix is also delicious by itself.
  • Simply pour over ice and serve.

My father-in-law first introduced me to this homemade bloody mary mix. It is very similar to what you'd buy in a store. Made as is, it is very spicy. You can customize it to your taste by cutting back on the pepper and hot sauce; I like about half the pepper and hot sauce. Enjoy this wonderful mix! It is so easy and much cheaper than buying pre-made mix.

½ (10.5 ounce) can condensed beef consomme (such as Campbell's ®)
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)
1 tablespoon celery salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Mix the tomato juice, beef consomme, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot pepper sauce, celery salt, and black pepper together in a pitcher; chill.
