STEAMED GINGER PEARS

Yield Serves 3

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 ripe Comice pears, peeled, cored, and halved
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh ginger
3 rock-candy swizzle sticks

Steps:

  • Fill a large saucepan or stockpot with 1 inch water. Remove the center stem of a collapsible basket steamer. Place the steamer in the saucepan.
  • Place pears in a small baking dish. Sprinkle ginger over the cavities of the pears. Set each swizzle stick across two pear halves. Set the baking dish on top of the steamer inside pot. Cover pot, and place over medium-high heat. Bring the water to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Steam pears, rotating swizzle sticks halfway through steaming, until tender, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the ripeness of the pears. Remove baking dish from steamer. Serve pears drizzled with any juices in the bottom of the baking dish.

Very light & tasty dessert. Great for asian themed dinners, or just because. You can also serve with homemade sugar or almond cookies

4 pears
4 tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons cognac (of choice)

Steps:

  • Slice off the top of pear and save as a lid.
  • Fill each pear with 1 tablespoon of each the honey and cognac.
  • Place lid back on and steam the pears for about 10 min.
  • or until tender.
  • Serve Hot.
  • Optional: You can place pear atop of your favorite almond or sugar cookie with additional honey drizzled on top.

4 pears
4 tablespoons honey

Steps:

  • 1. Cut tops off pears, about 1 inch down, and reserve as lids. Core each pear with a fruit corer to make a deep cavity, but do not cut clear through. 2. Fill cavities with honey and replace the tops. 3. Place pears upright in individual heatproof dishes. Steam until tender (see HOW-TO, _Steaming). (Depending on their size and ripeness, this will take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.) 4. Serve pears hot, in their steaming dishes. NOTE: This not only makes a simple and excellent dessert, but is soothing to the throat as well, and can be taken for coughs and colds. VARIATIONS: * For the pears, substitute apples. * In step 2, add with the honey, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon for each pear. Or omit the honey entirely and use 1 teaspoon cinnamon instead. * In step 2, stuff the pears with a mixture of chopped California dates and blanched walnut meats. (Allow about 1/4 cup of each for 4 pears.) Then spoon honey over each pear and steam as in step 3. * Halve and core the pears. Place each, cut-side down, on a heatproof platter and coat with the honey. Then sprinkle each half with 1/2 teaspoon preserved ginger candy, minced. Steam as in step 3.
