This main dish is a nice change of pace from traditional sweet-and-sour meatballs. It's much quicker to make, too. For variety, I like to substitute a different kind of sausage, like spicy Italian.-Nova MacIsaac, Souris, Prince Edward Island

1 package (12 ounces) uncooked sausage links
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, drained
Hot cooked rice

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook sausage until a thermometer reads 160° drain. When cool enough to handle, cut into bite-size pieces; set aside. , Combine the sugar, cornstarch, water, vinegar and ketchup; add to skillet. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cook for 2 minutes or until thickened. Add pineapple and sausage; heat through. Serve with rice.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 orange bell pepper, chopped
1/2 of a green bell pepper, chopped
1 1/2 cups pineapple chunks
3 cups cooked rice
Chili Garlic Sweet and Sour Sauce
sesame seeds, for garnish
1/2 cup pineapple juice
3 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside on a plate. Add the peppers to the pan and sauté over medium heat until tender. Remove and set aside with the sausage.
  • Combine all ingredients in the skillet and whisk until well mixed. Cook over medium-high heat until boiling, then reduce to a simmer. Add the sausage, peppers, and pineapple. Stir to coat. Serve over rice. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.

8 Italian sausages (hot or mild)
1 1/2 cups ketchup
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1/2 onion, chopped
3 tablespoons hot sauce
salt and pepper
1/2 cup mustard
3 tablespoons brown sugar, to make it sweeter you can add (optional)
1 (16 ounce) package Italian rolls (or whatever size you can find them in)

Steps:

  • Brown sausage on both sides.
  • Add all ingredients (except italian rolls) in crock pot and cook slowly for about 3 or 4 hours.
  • If you do not have a crock pot just cook slowly on the stove until sausage is done to your taste.
  • Slice a roll in half lenthwise (like a hot dog bun) and place on a plate, put a sausage inside. Spoon onions, peppers and some of the sauce on top.
  • Enjoy!

1 medium green bell pepper, cut into thin strips
1 medium red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
1 large sweet onion (such as Vidalia®), cut into strips
1 large jalapeno pepper, thinly sliced
2 (10 ounce) jars sweet and sour sauce (such as La Choy®)
aluminum foil

Steps:

  • Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate.
  • Combine sausage, bell peppers, onion, and jalapeno in a large bowl. Pour sweet and sour sauce on top and mix until vegetables are evenly coated.
  • Layer 2 to 3 sheets of aluminum foil; transfer sausage and vegetables to the foil and wrap up tightly so that no liquid is able to leak out.

I decided that I needed to share this recipe after two people came into our break room tonight to see what I was eating that smelled so good. The recipe is adopted from a woman I work with, she calls it "Party Kielbasa". I like using turkey smoked sausage, but it works well with either smoked sausage or kielbasa. I brown the sausage in a frying pan with the Liquid Smoke before I bake it, because I like it to be a little bit crunchy on the outside, but you can just throw it all together without browning it, it tastes good either way. I serve it over rice because it soaks up the juice nicely. It could probably be a crockpot recipe in the summer, but I like baking it in the winter.

12 ounces chili sauce (I use Heinz.)
20 ounces crushed pineapple with juice, undrained
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 bell peppers, cut into bite size pieces (I use yellow or red and green, to make it colorful)
1 lb smoked sausage or 1 lb kielbasa, cut into bite size pieces
5 -10 drops liquid smoke (I use it if I think my smoked sausage isn't smokey enough.) (optional)

Steps:

  • Mix the chili sauce, canned crushed pineapple with juice, and the brown sugar together in a large casserole dish (I use the stoneware from my crockpot).
  • Add the bell pepper pieces and smoked sausage.
  • Mix everything together.
  • Bake uncovered at 350 for one hour, stirring occasionally.
  • Enjoy!
