The Most Amazing Mulled Wine Ever! image

I ripped a mulled wine recipe out of a Bon Appetit magazine. Of course I didn't follow directions. I served this at a Halloween party & received RAVE reviews. Nice & warm & deliciously spicy! I think I'll keep a batch warming in my crockpot from Halloween through New Years from now on! And you don't need to use expensive liquor in this recipe. ;)

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
10 cinnamon sticks
4 whole star anise
1 tablespoon whole cloves
2 teaspoons fennel seeds
2 teaspoons whole white peppercorns, cracked
2 (750 ml) bottles bold red wine (Syrah, Zinfandel...)
2 cups ruby port
2 cups brandy

Steps:

  • Combine sugar, water & spices. Bring to a boil & simmer until sugar is dissolved, Set aside.
  • Combine wine, port & brandy in large crock pot. Add simple syrup with the spices. Stir.
  • Heat on high until hot then switch to low.
  • ENJOY.

I had this at a Christmas in July party in New Zealand a few years ago and finally got the recipe so I thought I'd post it. Enjoy!!!

1 bottle australian red wine
1 orange, quartered
clove, stuck in the Orange skins
2 cinnamon sticks
1 bay leaf (optional)
brown sugar
splash brandy (optional) or rum (optional)

Steps:

  • Put red wine, orange pieces, cinnamon sticks & bay leaf in a pan.
  • Warm but do not boil. Keep warm for 5 - 10 mins to let flavours infuse.
  • When warm add brown sugar to required sweetness.
  • Add the brandy or rum for a little 'oomph'.

This mulled wine recipe couldn't be easier to do. Don't bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Start with a little sugar, then add more to taste. This recipe can be easily doubled or trebled.

4 cups dry red wine
2 (2 inch) pieces cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
1 large strip of lemon peel
1 large strip of orange peel
2 tablespoons sugar, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Combine red wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, lemon peel, and orange peel in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Heat gently, but don't boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like to add more.
  • Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavors infuse the wine. Serve your mulled wine hot in glasses or mugs.
