1 cup milk
3 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups pancake mix
1 1/2 pints oil
1 teaspoon parsley

Steps:

  • Slice onions crosswise and separate into rings.
  • Combine milk, eggs and salt to taste in mixing bowl. Soak onion rings in mixture 30 minutes.
  • Place pancake mix in shallow bowl. Heat oil for frying in skillet to 375 degrees F. Remove onion rings from milk mixture, dip in pancake mix and place in hot oil. Fry rings until golden brown. Drain fried onion rings on paper towels. Pack fried onion rings solidly, but loosely, without pressing, into 8 x 4-inch loaf pan. Bake at 400 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes. Turn onto serving plate. Garnish with parsley.

4 pounds white colossal onions, peeled
2 eggs, beaten
1 quart whole milk
1 can beer
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons baking powder

Steps:

  • Crosscut onions into 1/2-inch rings, discarding onion hearts. In separate container combine eggs, milk, and beer. Mix flour and baking powder thoroughly in separate container. Soak onions in milk mixture and coat onions in flour. This step is repeated a second time, and may be done a third time to insure that the entire onion is dusted with flour mixture. Fry onions in a deep-fryer until golden brown.

1 large onion , cut into 1cm slices, rings separated
groundnut oil , for deep frying
150g self-raising flour
180ml sparkling water

Steps:

  • Use a fork to steady your onion. Slice the onion into rings about 1cm wide. Remove the skin and separate the rings.
  • Heat the oil to 180C in a heavy-based pan - it should be no more than 1/ 3 full.
  • Meanwhile put the flour and sparkling water in a bowl and season generously. Whisk together to form a batter.
  • Coat a small batch of onion rings in batter. Carefully lower into the hot oil and deep-fry until crisp and golden, about 2 - 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a piece of kitchen towel to drain. Repeat with the remaining onion and batter.

Remove the onion rings from milk mixture, dip in pancake mix and place in hot oil. Fry rings until golden brown. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Pack fried onion rings solidly, but loosely, without pressing too hard, into an 8-by 4-inch loaf pan. Bake at 400 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes. Turn out onto serving plate. 4 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 cup beer
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
Vegetable oil or shortening for frying
4 extra-large onions, sliced into rings 1/2 inch thick.
Coarse (kosher) salt, to taste

Steps:

  • Mix together the eggs, milk and beer in a bowl. In each of two bowls, mix together 2 cups flour and 1 tsp baking powder. Heat the shortenign in a large heavy pot to 350 degrees to 400 degrees or until very hot. Dip the onion rings into the egg mixture and then into the first bowl of dry mixture. Redip into the egg mixture and then into the second bowl of dry mixture. Add onion rings to the hot oil in small batches. Cook the onion rings for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon or a long pronged fork to paper towels to drain. Salt to taste and serve immediately.
