- Top Up the Tasty Bits. The vanilla powder added to your boxed cake mix might be past its prime. Bump up the flavor by adding ½ to 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Love Up the Layers. After baking and cooling your cake, slice it in half or thirds, and add something special to those layers. For extra moisture and flavor, you can brush each layer with simple syrup, jam or marmalade, or even a bit of your favorite booze (like coffee-flavored liqueur for tiramisu cake or a bit of rum for a spiced orange cake).
- Poke Around. Another way to soak your cake in flavor is to poke holes in the cake, pour a flavored mixture over the top, and let it soak into the holes.

- Substitute Butter for Oil. Remember what I said about water being tasteless and milk being rich? Well, that’s even more so when you compare oil to butter.
- Substitute Coffee for Water. Substitute strong brewed coffee for water in box chocolate cake mix to deepen the flavor.
- Substitute Ice Cream for Oil and Water. I know what you’re thinking, but this one little substitution is a whole game changer for taking box cake mix to the homemade level and beyond!
- Add Vanilla. This is probably my favorite box cake mix hack. Simply add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to one box of cake mix. And, please, use real vanilla extract.
- Add Lemon Zest. I think lemon zest adds the perfect touch of homemade goodness. Just add the zest from one or two lemons and maybe a tablespoon of juice to a box of white cake mix.
- Add Sour Cream. Add ½ cup sour cream and your cake will be richer tasting and more dense.
- Add More Eggs. Did you know that simply making your box cake mix with 3 or 4 eggs instead of 2 makes for a richer and denser cake? Whatever your box cake mix calls for, simply add 1 or 2 extra eggs!
- Add Mayo. Since mayonnaise is made from eggs and oil, it’s the perfect addition to your box cake mix. Simply add a couple tablespoons or up to 1 cup of mayo to your batter.
- Add Spices. Turn ordinary white cake mix or boring yellow cake mix into spice cake by adding spices. Simply add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon allspice or cloves.

- Add an extra egg. Adding an extra egg to a boxed cake recipe is a longtime trick to amp up the moisture and density. Most box recipes call for three eggs — try four and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

- Add mayonnaise. This might sound weird at first, but think about it: mayo is mostly just egg yolks and oil, which are already in the cake anyway! Once again, the logic here is that the mayo will add moisture, which we've already established is a very good thing when it comes to cakes.
- Add a box of instant pudding. Another tip is to toss in a box of instant pudding — just the powder; don't prep the pudding first. I was skeptical of this at first, since all the other tips I came across focused on adding moisture to a cake.
