Wheat is the most widely available cereal grain and is an immense source of energy. Porridge is a popular baby food across all cultures. Some make it salty with lots of green and colourful vegetables and some make it sweet with lots of dry fruits and milk. Adding a wholesome cereal meal to your baby's

Number Of Ingredients 7

Wheat (Coarse):1 cup
Moong dal (yellow):1/2 cup
Almonds:1/4 cup
Wheat mix:1/4 cup
Powdered jaggery:1.5 tsp
Water (hot): 1/2 cup
Milk (hot): 3/4 cup

Steps:

  • First, learn to make wheat mix for the porridge : Take a thick bottom pan and heat it.>>Then dry roast the almonds for 5 minutes on low-medium flame.>>Take out the roasted almond, allow it cool and coarsely grind it using a grinder.>>Wash the moong dal thoroughly and allow it to dry under the sunlight for 20 minutes.>>Add sundried moong dal to the pan and roast it until it gets golden brown.>>Now grind the roasted moong dal and mix it with coarse almond powder.>>Now roast the coarse wheat until it releases a nice nutty aroma.>>Mix everything and grains are ready for making wheat porridge.,For making wheat porridge : Take a pan and add 1/4 cup of water and jaggery powder or unrefined sugar to it.>>Allow it to boil until it melts completely.>>Filter out the jaggery water using a strainer and pour it into a saucepan.>>Take 1/2 cup of wheat mix in a saucepan.>>Allow it to cook for 10-15 minutes.>>Stir it continuously while cooking otherwise porridge may stick to the vessel.>>Check with your hand if the porridge is cooked.>>If you can press and mash the wheat easily then it is cooked completely, now add milk to this.>>Allow it to simmer for another 5 minutes.>>Check for the consistency of the porridge and switch off the flame.>>Serve it lukewarm.

Weaning recipe: Baby porridge image

Make this porridge as a first weaning food for your baby. With banana, carrots and peanut butter, it's tasty and will give your child new flavours to try

Yield Makes 12 portions of porridge

Number Of Ingredients 7

100g porridge oats
300ml full-fat milk
1 banana
1 large carrot
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp peanut butter

Steps:

  • To make baby porridge place 100g porridge oats in a food processor and blend.
  • Add 3 parts milk to 1 part porridge and gently heat. So for 100g oats use 300ml milk
  • Whilst the porridge heats for 5 minutes, mash the banana with a fork and peel and finely grate a carrot.
  • Remove the porridge from the heat and stir in the mashed banana, grated carrot, chia seeds, cinnamon and peanut butter.
  • Mix well and serve a portion to baby once cooled. The rest of the porridge will keep for up to 5 days in the fridge.

  • Barley porridge. 1tbsp barley powder. 1tbsp apple puree. ¼ tsp raisin puree. 1 cup water. How to: Boil water in a medium-sized saucepan over low heat.
  • Semolina porridge. 2tbsps semolina (dry roasted) 1tbsp mashed banana. 1 cup water. How to: Boil water in a saucepan over low heat. Add roasted semolina with constant stirring.
  • Oats porridge. 2tbsps rolled oats. 2tbsps papaya puree. 40ml breast milk or formula milk. 1 cup water. How to: Boil water in a cooking pot over low heat.
