Air-popped microwave popcorn is a healthy snack that is simple to make and done in less than 10 minutes. Made in the microwave with no added oil, the kernels come out perfect every time - season with your favorite oil or seasoning blend to kick up the flavor.

1/4 cup popcorn kernels
Oil of choice - Melted butter, ghee, or extra virgin olive oil
Seasoning - Salt or your favorite popcorn seasoning blend

Steps:

  • Place the kernels in a large glass or ceramic bowl and cover with a tight-fitting plate or lid.
  • Place in the microwave and set the time for 6 minutes. {The cooking time will vary with every microwave.}
  • Cook until the popping slows to 2-3 seconds between pops, stop the microwave and remove the bowl. {The bowl and lid will be very hot. Use caution when removing!}
  • Place the popcorn in a large bowl and drizzle on butter or oil of choice. Toss to coat evenly.
  • Season with your favorite seasonings and toss again.
  • Serve and enjoy!

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil
1/2 cup popcorn kernels, divided
Salt, to taste

Steps:

  • In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, combine the oil and 2 popcorn kernels. Cover the pot and wait for the kernels to pop, which might take a few minutes. In the meantime, place a large serving bowl near the stove so it's ready when you need it.
  • Once the kernels pop, turn off the burner, remove the pot from the heat and pour in the remaining popcorn kernels. Cover the pot again, and give the pot a little shimmy to distribute the kernels evenly. Let the pot rest for 60 seconds to make sure the oil doesn't get too hot before the kernels are ready to pop.
  • Turn the heat back up to medium, put the pot back onto the burner and continue cooking the popcorn, carefully shimmying the pot occasionally to cook the kernels evenly. Once the kernels start popping, tip the lid just a touch to allow steam to escape (see photo).
  • Continue cooking until the popping sound slows to about one pop per every few seconds. (If the popcorn tries to overflow the pot, just tip the upper portion of popcorn into your bowl and return it to the heat.)
  • Remove the lid and dump the popcorn into your serving bowl. Sprinkle the popcorn with a couple pinches of salt, to taste, and any other topping you would like. Toss the popcorn and serve immediately, for best flavor and texture. The popcorn will taste good for several hours, though.

Steps:

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Once preheated, cover the basket of the air fryer with a layer of foil. Do not cover the sides of the basket.
  • Add the olive oil and the popcorn to the foil. Spread the kernels into an even layer, and coat with the oil.
  • Cook the popcorn for 5-7 minutes. Listen for the kernels popping and remove the basket once the kernels have all popped.

Steps:

  • Pour 1/3 cup popcorn into one brown paper lunch sack. Fold the top of the bag over twice to seal in the ingredients.
  • Cook in the microwave at full power for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes or until you hear a pause of about 2 seconds between pops.
  • Repeat with the remaining popcorn kernels.
  • Carefully open the bag to avoid steam, pour into a serving bowl, and enjoy.
