1/2 cup star anise, pieces (crushed)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
3 tablespoons five-spice powder
1/4 cup chopped scallion
1/4 cup red wine
2 tablespoons sugar
12 black peppercorns
1 teaspoon granulated garlic powder
canola oil, to cook
sesame oil, to cook

Steps:

  • In an oiled sautè skillet oiled with Canola oil& Sesame oil, add all the ingredients& bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat& simmer about 5 minutes.
  • Check for seasoning.
  • Bring to a boil again.
  • Reduce heat& simmer another 10 minutes, stirring constantly until sauce somewhat thickens, almost like a syrup.
  • Strain& use the sauce to cook over duck, chicken, pork chops or beef cubes.

1 lb flank steak, cut across the grain into strips 3-inches long and 1/2-inch wide
1/2 cup anise hyssop, florets chopped
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons sherry wine
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup chicken broth
2 teaspoons cornstarch, dissolved in
2 teaspoons cold water

Steps:

  • Combine flank steak with chopped herb, soy sauce, brown sugar, and sherry.
  • Marinate for several hours.
  • Remove meat from marinade, reserving any remaining sauce.
  • Heat wok or large skillet, add oil and stir-fry meat quickly over medium-high heat till brown.
  • Add chicken broth and remaining marinade and heat through.
  • Stir in cornstarch mixture and cook, stirring till thickened.
