TRADITIONAL BANANA SPLIT
There is some debate in our ice cream parlor what the "traditional" split consists of. I did some research before we opened and it seems that this is the most consistently "traditional" split served, even though some have marshmallow, peanuts, crushed cherries and more. I prefer hot fudge over the chocolate syrup, personally :P

- Cut the ends of the banana off (about 1/4 inch) while still in the peel.
- Slice in half longways.
- Pop each half of the banana out of the peel onto each side of the ice cream row, pressing down and in a little so it'll stay put.

- Spoon the wet walnuts over all three scoops of ice cream.
- Top each scoop with some whipped cream and a cherry for each.
- Enjoy!

Steps:
- Halve bananas, then cut into quarters. Place 3 segments into each serving dish. Using a melon baler to achieve "tiny" scoops, place a scoop of each flavor of ice cream on top of the banana. (Ice cream may be scooped ahead of time and refrozen. This will help the ice cream to hold its shape.)
- Drizzle a little bit of each sauce over the ice cream and sprinkle with crushed nuts, whipped cream, and top it off with a maraschino cherry.
- Break up or chop the chocolate and place it in a bowl. Melt in microwave on low power, stirring every 30 seconds. Serve immediately.
- Using a fork, mash strawberries with sugar in a bowl until well mixed. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- Puree pineapple and sugar in food processor or blender until slightly chunky. Refrigerate until ready to use.
BANANA SPLIT TOPPING RECIPES
It starts off with a full banana, split right down the center and opened up to accommodate 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream. Each scoop is covered in a classic sauce topping in the order of pineapple, hot fudge, and strawberry.

Steps:
- In a small sauce pan add the crushed pineapple (including the juices), sugar, and cornstarch. Heat it over medium heat until it starts to get bubbly and thicken, stirring frequently. Cook for 2 more minutes, continuing to stir, then remove from heat.
- Pour into glass mason jars, cover and let cool for at least 1 hour.
- Combine the strawberries and sugar in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Stir, and use a potato masher to break down strawberries to your desired consistency.
- Add the cornstarch and continue stirring frequently until the mixture bubbles and thickens. Continue cooking for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and pour into mason jars. Cover and let cool for at least 1 hour.
- In a small but heavy saucepan melt the chocolate and butter. Add the sugar, and gradually stir in the evaporated milk. Bring the chocolate mixture to a boil, then reduce heat. Boil gently over low heat for 8 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove the pan from heat, cool slightly. Serve warm.

BANANA SPLITS WITH PINEAPPLE BROWN SUGAR TOPPING
Steps:
- Combine the pineapple with juice, lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon in a medium saucepan. Cook over a medium heat, uncovered, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved and the juice is reduced somewhat, about 3 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Cut the bananas in half crosswise. Cut each banana half lengthwise, being careful not to cut all the way through. Split the banana halves open and place each one on a small dessert plate. Top each banana with a scoop of ice cream then about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the warm pineapple mixture. Top each with a mint leaf, if using, and serve.

BANANA SPLIT DELIGHT
I have not been able to find a banana split dessert that did not call for eggs, but there was no baking required. That made me a little leary. This one is egg free and delicious.

ALL-AMERICAN BANANA SPLIT
In 1904, the first banana split recipe was made here in Latrobe, Pennsylvania by David Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist at a local drug store. We still use his original formula when we make banana splits in our restaurants. -Melissa Blystone, Valley Dairy

- Fresh Fruit. Instead of canned or frozen fruit, go for fresh! Berries, mango, kiwi, pineapple, citrus, even apples or pears. Just about any fruit can be mixed and matched to create a mouthwatering combination that will be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.
- Marshmallow Creme. Another fun replacement – use marshmallow creme instead of the usual whipped cream to top your sundae. It’s fluffy texture is so lovely, and it adds a new dimension of flavor to your ice cream sundae.
- Cookie Crumbles. One of my personal favorite sweet treats are ice cream sandwiches, so I thought, why not incorporate that in my next banana split? Just crumble up your favorite cookies and sprinkle them on top of your split.
- Chocolate Chips. Rather than hot fudge or chocolate syrup, you can get your chocolate fix from chocolate chips. You can do milk chocolate, semi-sweet, white, dark, miniature, or full sized, there are so many options to choose from.
- Candy Bars. Just like at your local froyo or soft serve, you can mix some flavorful candy bar chunks into your banana split. Cutting them up after they’ve gotten a chance to soften a little makes it easier, plus the ingredients get oh so gooey and delightful.
- Coconut. For a more tropical flare, add coconut! You can get fresh coconut in bite sized chunks or, more simply, toasted and shredded coconut from the baking aisle at your local grocery.
- Spices. Get creative in the kitchen by topping your banana split with any sort of spice you would use while baking. Cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin spice, or even a splash of ginger if you’re brave enough!
- Sauces. There’s a variety of ice cream sauces that you can get at any grocery store or market. Hot fudge, caramel, and strawberry are the most common.
- Candy. Another classic topping to include in your ice cream sundae bar is bite-sized candy. M&Ms, Skittles, Reese’s Pieces, Gummy Bears, or even Sour Patch Kids are all great options.
- S’Mores Split. And now for a few easy combinations that will take your banana split to a whole other level. Add on mini marshmallows (or marshmallow creme), crumbled graham crackers, and your choice of chocolate (chips, chunks, or hot fudge) to recreate a campfire classic.
