Our ancestors made this bread when on the trail. Try throwing in blueberries or raisins for added flavor.

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons baking powder
¼ cup butter, melted
1 ½ cups water

Steps:

  • Measure flour, salt, and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir to mix. Pour melted butter and water over flour mixture. Stir with fork to make a ball.
  • Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface, and knead gently about 10 times. Pat into a flat circle 3/4 to 1 inch thick.
  • Cook in a greased frying pan over medium heat, allowing about 15 minutes for each side. Use two lifters for easy turning. May also be baked on a greased baking sheet at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 25 to 30 minutes.

4 cups flour
8 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup currants
1 1/2 cups milk

Steps:

  • Combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Work in shortening as for pastry.
  • Add currants.
  • Moisten with milk, making a soft dough. Knead 10 seconds.
  • Pat out on a greased cookie sheet, to a thickness of a 1/2 inch.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Serve warm with butter.

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons baking powder
1 egg
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons melted butter
2/3 cup milk

Steps:

  • Beat together until light; 1 egg and 2 tbsp sugar; 3 tbsp melted butter; 2/3 cup milk.
  • Stir in flour, cornmeal and salt.
  • Beat some more and add 3 tbsp baking powder.
  • Put in greased tins and bake 30 minutes in 350 oven.
