BROKEN GLASS CAKE
The name does not accurately describe this dessert but since it has been a family favorite for so many years I am loathe to change it. This is a light, child-friendly dessert we instituted for the children at Christmas. It is especially well-received after a heavy meal. You will be asked for seconds!

Steps:
- Place lime, orange, and strawberry gelatin mixes into 3 separate 9x9-inch glass dishes.
- Pour 1 cup boiling water into each flavor of gelatin mix; stir the gelatin until dissolved.
- Pour 1 cup cold water into each flavor of gelatin, stir to combine, and refrigerate the 3 flavors of gelatin until set, at least 4 hours.
- Heat pineapple juice in a saucepan until hot but not simmering. Stir unflavored gelatin into pineapple juice until dissolved. Refrigerate pineapple juice mixture until cool and thickened, about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Mix graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and brown sugar together in a bowl. Set 1 cup of crumb mixture aside for garnish. Press remaining 2 cups crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9x13-inch cake pan to make a crust.
- Pour cream into a large metal mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until the cream is fluffy and forms soft peaks, about 3 minutes. Slowly beat sugar into whipped cream, 1 or 2 tablespoons at a time; beat in vanilla extract.
- Cut the different flavors of gelatin into cubes. Use a thin spatula to lift the cubes away from the bottom of the dish and loosen them.
- Very gently fold the thickened pineapple juice and gelatin cubes into the whipped cream mixture until thoroughly combined. Spoon into the graham cracker crust.
- Sprinkle the cake with reserved graham cracker crumb mixture.
- Refrigerate until set, at least 3 hours to overnight.

BROKEN GLASS DESSERT
When it's cut into squares, this dessert looks just like stained-glass windows. The buttery graham cracker crust pairs perfectly with the lovely creamy topping. —Kathy Crow, Cordova, Alaska

"BROKEN GLASS" CUPCAKES
The recipe for the "glass" is essentially one for caramel. The trick is to cook it for a shorter amount of time than usual so it stays clear.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Make the cupcakes: Line cupcake tins with baking cups. Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 3/4 teaspoon salt into a medium bowl. Combine milk and vanilla in a measuring cup.
- Beat butter with a mixer on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Reduce speed to medium, and gradually add granulated sugar in a slow, steady stream. Beat until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low, and add flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with milk mixture, beginning and ending with flour.
- In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites with a mixer on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. Fold one-third of the whites into the cupcake batter. Fold in remaining egg whites in 2 batches.
- Divide batter among baking cups, filling each halfway full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of each comes out clean and the tops spring back when lightly touched, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely in tins set on wire racks.
- Meanwhile, make the caramel: Bring granulated sugar and water to a boil in a small high-sided saucepan, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium-high, and cook until mixture just starts to turn pale gold around edges. Remove from heat, and immediately pour caramel onto a rimmed baking sheet. Working quickly, tilt pan to spread caramel to edges to make a very thin layer. Let cool to harden.
- Make the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter with a mixer on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Gradually add confectioners' sugar and vanilla. Beat until creamy and spreadable.
- Frost each cupcake using an offset spatula. Twist pan to release and break caramel in order for it to resemble broken glass. Place a shard or 2 of caramel "glass" in the center of each cupcake. Drizzle or pipe cherry preserves where caramel has entered the cupcake.
BROKEN GLASS JELLO
This recipe is from a blog online. This dessert is very colorful (use your imagination for the colors that look good together). I recommend red, blue, yellow and green. Kids will love it! "Zaar wouldn't let me post 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin (like Knox). The envelopes are .25 oz. each.

6 CRAFTS TO MAKE WITH BROKEN GLASS | DOITYOURSELF.COM
From doityourself.com
- Mosaic Stepping Stones. Dress up a boring paver or plain stepping stone with a unique, sun-sparkling mosaic, and give your garden some eclectic charm.
- Customized Planters. This uses the same idea as the mosaic stone, only on a terracotta pot instead. As a bonus, since the planter is ceramic, you can use mortar instead of epoxy, which is a little easier to work with.
- Ground-level Bird Bath. Birds don’t really need a high surface to enjoy a quick bath. A ground-level pool is more naturalistic and helps you reuse leftover glass.
- DIY Sea Glass. If you have a concrete mixer or large rock tumbler, then what you actually have is your own sea glass factory. Throw the glass bits in with coarse sand and water, and set it to tumble for a few hours.
- Broken Glass Votives. This is a very simple way to repurpose crushed glass into something luminous and beautiful. Using the hammer method discussed above, break the glass into very small pieces.
- Unique Jewelry. If you’ve been able to make your own sea glass, you can take things a step further by making a unique pendant necklace to match. This maneuver is a bit tricky, so if you’re a novice with a drill, you might want to get some practice first.
