Old Fashioned Brown Sugar and Molasses Oven-Baked Beans image

Put these ingredients in your Bean Pot and after about six hours you'll have the best baked beans you've ever tasted! Serve with Baby Back Ribs and Party wings.

Provided by GREG IN SAN DIEGO

Categories     Beans

Time 8h30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups dried navy beans
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
3 tablespoons dark molasses
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1/4 cup ketchup
1 medium onion, peeled, left whole
1/4 lb salt pork

Steps:

  • Remove stones from beans, rinsing well in a colander.
  • Place beans in a large pan, adding a teaspoon of salt along with enough water to cover contents by 3 inches.
  • Over high heat, bring beans to a rolling boil for 2 minutes.
  • Remove pan from heat, cover pan and let stand for 1 hour.
  • Uncover pan, breing contents back to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer until beans are tender (1 to 1 1/2 hours).
  • As necessary, add more water to keep beans well covered.
  • Drain beans well, reserving liquid.
  • In a 2 1/2 quart bean pot (or casserole) combine molasses, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  • Add drained beans. Then stir in enough reserved cooking liquid to cover beans.
  • Mil well.
  • One one side of pot, push whole onion down into beans.
  • Cut several gashes in the salt pork and push it down into beans on other side of the pot.
  • Cover pot, place in oven and set heat to 350 degrees.
  • Bake until beans are bubbling (about 1 hour).
  • Reduce heat to 250 degrees and continue to bake for 6 to 8 hours more, stirring every hour or so.
  • As beans cook, they will absorb liquid.
  • Continue cooking, adding reserved liquid (or water) a little at a time to keep beans moist, but not soupy.
  • Baked beans are done when thick and fragrant, with a deep, brownish red color.
  • When serving, remove and discard onion, while keeping in sliced salt pork if desired.

BAKED BEANS FROM SCRATCH

Baked Beans from Scratch image

Navy beans, molasses, and maple syrup combine to make this classic dish at home.

Provided by wkndyummychef

Categories     Side Dish     Beans and Peas     Baked Bean Recipes

Time 15h30m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup dried navy beans
4 cups water
¼ cup ketchup
¼ cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
⅛ teaspoon chili powder
1 small onion, chopped

Steps:

  • Place the navy beans into a large container and cover with several inches of cool water; let stand 8 hours to overnight. Or, bring the beans and water to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Once boiling, turn off the heat, cover, and let stand 1 hour. Drain and rinse before using.
  • Place the beans in a large saucepan with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 1 hour.
  • Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Stir the ketchup, maple syrup, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and chili powder together in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Once the beans have simmered for 1 hour, drain, and reserve the cooking liquid. Pour the beans into a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish and stir in the chopped onion and the molasses sauce. Stir in enough of the reserved cooking liquid so the sauce covers the beans by 1/4 inch.
  • Cover, and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C), and cook 6 hours longer. Stir the beans after they have cooked for 3 hours. Once the beans are tender and the sauce has reduced and is sticky, remove from the oven, stir, recover, and allow to stand 15 minutes before serving.

BACON BROWN SUGAR BAKED BEANS

Bacon Brown Sugar Baked Beans image

My husband used to ask for baked beans every day when we first married. I made them this way to save time. I made them every day for a year, thinking he would get sick and tired of them & not ask for them all the time. After 24 years of marriage, this is still one of his favorite dishes.

16 ounces van camp's pork and beans
1 tablespoon instant minced onion
2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • Cook the bacon in a large, oven-proof pot over medium high heat. When the bacon is browned (about 10 minutes), remove from heat.
  • Add the onions and the beans on top of the bacon in the pot. Whisk the molasses, mustard, and pepper together and pour over everything. Add the hot water (I actually didn’t measure my water – I just poured water from the kettle until I started to see it under the beans).
  • Bake for 30 minutes, stir, and bake for another 20-30 minutes. Continue this process until the beans are sticky and thick and deep golden brown (for me, it was about 1 1/2 hours total time in oven). Add water to adjust consistency as needed. Remove from the oven and stir in the brown sugar and salt to taste.
