MY MOM'S FAMOUS CALICO BEANS



My Mom's Famous Calico Beans image

1 (15-ounce) can red pinto beans
1 (15-ounce) can white kidney/cannellini beans
1 (15-ounce) can black beans
8 ounces bacon (chopped)
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup ketchup (see note)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons dry mustard
1/3 cup brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon apple cider or red wine vinegar
1/3 cup water or low-sodium broth
1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, helps thicken the sauce a bit)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly grease a 3-quart baking dish (see note).
  • Drain and rinse all the beans (go ahead and throw them all together in one colander) and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, cook the bacon until crisp. Drain on paper towels, leaving about 1 teaspoon grease in the skillet.
  • Add the onion to the skillet over medium heat and cook until softened, 4-5 minutes. Off the heat, add the beans and bacon.
  • In a liquid measuring cup or bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire, dry mustard, sugar, salt, vinegar, water (or broth) and cornstarch, if using, and whisk to combine thoroughly. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir well.
  • Scrape the entire mixture into the prepared baking pan. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45-60 minutes. Serve immediately.

1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1 small onion, chopped
1 can (21 ounces) pork and beans
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (16 ounces) butter beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until beef is no longer pink, 5-7 minutes, breaking up beef into crumbles; drain. Stir in remaining ingredients. Transfer to a greased 2-qt. cast-iron pan or baking dish. , Bake, uncovered, until the beans are as thick as desired, 45-60 minutes.

½ cup bacon, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
1 (15 ounce) can pork and beans
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans
1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
½ cup ketchup
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup chopped onion
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon mustard powder
½ cup chopped celery

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 C).
  • Place bacon and ground beef in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain and set aside.
  • In a four quart casserole dish, mix together the bacon, ground beef, pork and beans, kidney beans, butter beans, lima beans, ketchup, onion, vinegar, dry mustard and celery.
  • Cover and bake for 1 hour.

1/2 cup catsup
1 can kidney bean

Steps:

  • Brown hamburger.
  • Add onion and cook until onions are transparent.
  • Drain.
  • Mix hamburger mixture and everything else together.

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 lb bacon (cooked and crumbled)
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 (15 ounce) can lima beans (drained)
1 (16 ounce) can butter beans (drained)
1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, I use dark red (drained)
1 (28 ounce) can baked beans, I use bush original recipe
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 dash onion powder (or salt)
1 dash garlic powder (or salt)

Steps:

  • Brown Ground beef with onion till it is cooked and no longer pink - Drain.
  • Mix all ingredients together and cook in Crook pot/Slow cooker on high for 5 1/2 - 6 hours - stir every 1/2 hour.
  • Or you can bake at 350 degrees in oven for 2-3 hours - stir every 1/2 hour.
  • ( If you can not find Lima Beans in a can - use Frozen).
