Cherry Blossom Cookies are made with a sweet and buttery almond cookie dough filled with chopped maraschino cherries, rolled in sugar and topped with a Hersey's Kiss. This is a show stopper when it comes to homemade Christmas cookies. Our favorite Christmas cookie.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup butter (no substitutions softened)
1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
1/8 tsp salt
2 teaspoons maraschino cherry liquid
1/4 teaspoon pure almond extract
2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup maraschino cherries (chopped)
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling the cookie dough)
48 whole Hershey's milk chocolate kisses

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350' F. Beat butter in a mixing bowl on medium high speed for 30 seconds.
  • Add powdered sugar and salt; beat until combined.
  • Beat in cherry liquid and almond extract until combined.
  • Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in the remaining flour and the cherries with a wooden spoon.
  • Chill dough for at least an hour.
  • Unwrap all the Hersey kisses and set aside.
  • Shape dough into 1 inch balls, rolling them in your hand.
  • Gently flatten the balls into a disk.
  • Dip in granulated sugar, covering all sides of the dough.
  • Place balls 2 inches apart on a un-greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake cookies 10-14 minutes just until the bottom edges are lightly browned.
  • Remove each baking sheet of cookies from the oven and immediately press a Hersey kiss into the middle of the hot cookies.
  • Let cool about five minutes and carefully move the cookies to a cooling rack with out disturbing the soft Hersey kiss. (see notes).
  • Cool completely before storing in a single layer in an air tight container.

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons brandy
2 large egg whites
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted, plus more as needed
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Pink gel food color
1/2 teaspoon brown luster dust
Clear alcohol, such as vodka or lemon extract

Steps:

  • Sugar Cookies: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Add vanilla, egg, and brandy and continue beating until well combined. Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture, beating until just combined. Shape dough into a disk, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate until firm, at least 45 minutes and up to overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Use a 2 5/8-inch square cutter to cut out squares. Reroll scraps once (you should have about 16 cookies). Transfer to prepared sheets, spaced about 1 inch apart. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Bake until set and golden around edges, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer sheets to wire racks and let cool completely.
  • Royal Icing: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat egg whites on medium speed until frothy. Reduce speed to low and add confectioners' sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, increasing speed to medium-high between each addition, until mixture has consistency of shampoo. Add lemon juice. Tint with pink food color until desired shade is reached. Transfer mixture to a shallow bowl. If not using immediately, icing can be stored at room temperature, with plastic wrap pressed directly on surface, up to 2 days, or in refrigerator, well wrapped in plastic, up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before using.
  • Working with one cookie at a time, dip cookie top-side down in icing to completely coat surface, allowing excess glaze to drip back into bowl. Invert cookie and clean edges with your finger, if desired. Transfer to a wire rack or baking sheet and let stand at room temperature until completely dry, at least 12 hours and up to overnight. Reserve remaining icing for decorations, at room temperature, with plastic wrap pressed directly on surface, or in refrigerator, well wrapped in plastic. Bring to room temperature before using.
  • Stir additional confectioners' sugar into icing until it has consistency of toothpaste. Divide mixture into 3 portions and tint with pink food color until 3 desired shades are reached. Transfer each color to a piping bag fitted with a small plain round or star tip (such as Ateco #2, #3, or #13).
  • Place luster dust in a small bowl. Stir in vodka, a little at a time, until mixture has consistency of thick watercolor paint. Using a small food-safe paintbrush, paint a tree branch design on surface of each cookie. Using the 3 shades of pink icing, pipe small blossoms on branches. Let stand at room temperature until completely dry, about 4 hours. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days.

54 milk chocolate kisses, unwrapped

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, beat butter, confectioners' sugar and salt until blended. Beat in cherry juice, extract and, if desired, food coloring. Gradually beat in flour. Stir in cherries., Shape dough into 1-in. balls. Place 1 in. apart on greased baking sheets. , Bake 8-10 minutes or until bottoms are light brown. Immediately press a chocolate kiss into center of each cookie (cookie will crack around edges). Cool on pans 2 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool.

1/3 cup shortening
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
About 36 candied or maraschino cherries

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Crush cereal; set aside. In large bowl, mix sugar, shortening, milk, vanilla and egg. Stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir in raisins and nuts.
  • Drop dough by teaspoonfuls into crushed cereal; roll gently until completely coated. Place cookies about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Press cherry into each cookie.
  • Bake 10 to 12 minutes or just until set. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.

3 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon instant coffee granules
1 cup butter
1 ¼ cups packed brown sugar
¼ cup dark corn syrup
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon cream
⅓ cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter
3 tablespoons cherry juice
1 ½ cups chopped walnuts
60 maraschino cherries, halved

Steps:

  • Sift together: 3 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ginger and 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee. Put aside.
  • Cream 1 cup butter or margarine. Add 1 1/4 cups brown sugar. Cream well. Blend in dark corn syrup, egg, and cream. Add dry ingredients and mix well.
  • Roll out dough, 1/3 at a time on floured board to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut cookies into 2 1/2 inch rounds. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
  • To Make Filling: Combine 1/3 firmly packed brown sugar, 1 tablespoon butter, 3 tablespoons cherry juice. Stir in 1 1/2 cups chopped nuts, chopped fine.
  • Place 1/2 teaspoon filling in center of each round. Shape into a bell by folding sides of dough to meet over the filling using spatula to fold over sides. Make top of bell narrower than at the clapper end. Place 1/2 of a maraschino cherry (cut side down) at open end of each bell for clapper. Bake at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes.

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. On a lightly floured surface, shape dough into two 6-in. rolls; wrap each in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm., Unwrap and cut into 3/8-in. slices. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool completely., For frosting, in a large bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Beat in the confectioners' sugar, vanilla and enough milk to achieve piping consistency. Tint frosting with cocoa and food coloring. Cut a small hole in the corner of a pastry or plastic bag; fill with frosting., Spread preserves over cookies to within 1/4 in. of edges. Pipe lines across the top of each cookie, forming a lattice. Pipe a fluted edge around the tops of cookies.

3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 (16 ounce) jars maraschino cherries, with stems (about 65 cherries)
confectioner's sugar (for dipping)

Steps:

  • Drain the cherries. Leave them in a strainer while you make the cookie dough.
  • Put flour, baking powder, soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Stir with a fork until thoroughly mixed. Cut in the softened butter with two forks, continuing to cut until the mixture looks like course corn meal (you can also do this in a food processor with the steel blade, using cold butter cut in 1/2 inch chunks).
  • Beat the eggs in a medium-sized bowl and combine them with the sugar.
  • Add the egg and sugar mixture to the rest of the ingredients and stir until thoroughly mixed.
  • Extract small bits of dough with your fingers and wrap them around each maraschino cherry, leaving the stem sticking out. Press the bottoms of the dough-wrapped cherries down slightly on a greased baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes (cookies wil be white, if they start to brown, reduce the baking time). Let the cookies cool on the cookie sheet. Then dip them in powdered sugar so that the entire cookie part is covered, but not the stem.
