Flour dumplings are added to a peach syrupy mixture to create a wonderful dessert. This is an Amish recipe. Using cream or canned milk instead of the milk gives this a creamier texture but also more calories. You can use fresh, frozen, or canned peaches.

1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter
2 cups sliced peeled peaches
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk

Steps:

  • Stir water, sugar, and butter together in a pot over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves and mixture has a syrupy texture, 5 to 10 minutes. Add peaches to syrup; bring to a boil.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Stir milk into flour mixture until a stiff batter forms.
  • Drop batter by large spoonfuls into boiling peach syrup; cover the pot with a lid, reduce heat to medium, and cook until dumplings are set, about 20 minutes.

4 cups sliced ripe peaches, or more to taste
⅔ cup white sugar
⅔ cup brown sugar
½ cup water
½ cup margarine
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
⅓ cup white sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons margarine
¾ cup milk

Steps:

  • Combine peaches, 2/3 cup white sugar, brown sugar, water, 1/2 cup margarine, and cinnamon together in a large skillet; bring to a boil. Cover skillet with a lid and cook peach mixture until sugars have dissolved and peaches are softened, about 10 minutes.
  • Mix flour, 1/3 cup white sugar, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl. Cut 3 tablespoons margarine into flour mixture until mixture is crumbly; add milk and stir until you have a soft dough. Drop tablespoons of the dough into the peach mixture.
  • Cover skillet tightly with a lid and cook, without removing lid, until dumplings are cooked through, about 15 minutes.

1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) sliced peaches, drained
1 large egg, room temperature
Whole milk
1-1/2 cups biscuit/baking mix
Optional: Cinnamon and whipped cream

Steps:

  • In a 10-in. skillet, combine the first five ingredients. Add peaches; bring to a boil. Place egg in a 1-cup measuring cup; add enough milk to measure 1/2 cup and stir until combined. Place biscuit mix in a bowl; stir in milk mixture with a fork just until moistened. Drop by six spoonfuls over top of boiling fruit. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes; cover and simmer until a toothpick inserted in a dumpling comes out clean, about 10 minutes longer. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. Serve warm, with whipped cream if desired.

1 can (14-1/2 ounces) pitted tart cherries, undrained
1 cup sugar, divided
1/2 cup water
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Dash salt
1/3 cup milk
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cherries with juice, 3/4 cup sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer., Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, lemon zest, salt and remaining sugar. Stir in milk and butter just until moistened., Drop by tablespoonfuls onto simmering cherry mixture. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in a dumpling comes out clean (do not lift the cover while simmering).

I now make it for my daughter (and my husband) on a regular basis, at least once every two weeks. It is the ultimate in comfort food. My daughter loves it reheated for breakfast. Hope you all enjoy this age old recipe!

2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans tart red cherries
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon almond oil (optional)
3 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 1/4 cups milk

Steps:

  • In a large dutch oven, combine tart cherries (including the juice), sugar, water, cinnamon and almond oil.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • In the meantime, mix together the Bisquick baking mix and milk.
  • When cherries have come to a boil, drop dumplings into cherry mixture by tablespoonfuls until all the dumpling mixture is used.
  • Lower heat to medium and cook uncovered for 10 minutes, then cover and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let stand 20 minutes, covered.

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter or 1 cup shortening
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
6 medium ripe peaches, peeled
milk
2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
honey (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine first 3 ingredients and cut in the 1 cup of butter with a pastry blender until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle 1/3 cup milk, 1 tablespoon at a time evenly over surface; stir with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Divide dough into 6 portions. Roll each portion of dough into a 7-inch square on a lightly floured surface.
  • Combine sugar and next 5 ingredients; reserve 2 tablespoons of this mixture and set aside. Coat each peach with remaining sugar mixture and place in the center of a pastry square.
  • For each dumpling, moisten edges of dough with milk and pull corners of square over peach; pinch dough together sealing all seams.
  • Freeze the dumplings for 30 minutes.
  • Place dumplings in a lightly greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Drizzle each one with a teaspoon of butter and sprinkle with reserved sugar mixture.
  • Bake at 425°F for 35 minutes. Drizzle with honey before serving.
