I love making this easy grilled ham and cheese sandwich on a cool night with a cup of tomato soup.

2 slices whole grain bread
2 teaspoons butter
2 slices Swiss cheese
2 thin slices deli ham
1 teaspoon mayonnaise
1 teaspoon whole grain mustard

Steps:

  • Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Spread one side of each slice of bread with 1 teaspoon butter. Place one slice, butter-side down in the hot skillet. Top with Swiss cheese and ham. Spread the unbuttered side of the second slice of bread with mayonnaise and mustard; place it, butter-side up on top of the sandwich. Cook until the sandwich is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes per side.

4slices white or wholemeal bread
butter
English mustard
4thick slices of ham
1 tbsp snipped chive
200g Cheshire cheese

Steps:

  • Toast the bread on one side only. Butter lightly on the untoasted side and smear with a little mustard. Top with a slice of ham, then half the chives.
  • Crumble the cheese on top. Grill until bubbling, scatter over remaining chives and cut into fingers.

4 slices whole grain bread, sliced thick
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
4 slices cooked ham, sliced thin
2 slices cheddar cheese
1 slice red onion, separated
2 teaspoons horseradish sauce
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

Steps:

  • Spread one side of TWO slices of bread with the mayonnaise, then onto the mayo side layer the ham, cheese & onion.
  • Spread one side of the remaining TWO slices of bread each with a teaspoon of the horseradish sauce.
  • Place the 2nd slice of bread horseradish-side down over the onion, then on the outer sides of the sandwich, spread the softened butter evenly.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, toast the sandwiches for about 5 minutes on each side or until the bread is lightly browned & cheese has melted.

4 eggs
2/3 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 slices bread
2 tablespoons soft butter
2 tablespoons mustard
4 slices cheese (your preference)
4 slices cooked ham
butter (for frying)

Steps:

  • Beat together eggs, cream and salt in pie plate.
  • Spread tops of the slices of bread evenly with the butter, then the mustard.
  • Top four slices of the bread with the cheese and ham.
  • Place other four slices on top and dip into the egg mixture.
  • Place sandwiches in preheated skillet with butter added and cook each side until golden brown.
  • If cooked in batches, keep warm in oven until all sandwiches are done.

6 oz thinly sliced cooked ham (from deli)
1 1/2 cups shredded mild Cheddar cheese (6 oz)
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
Powdered sugar

Steps:

  • In shallow dish, stir milk, Bisquick mix, vanilla and eggs with fork or whisk until blended. In each slice of bread, cut 3-inch pocket through top crust. Spread about 1 teaspoon mustard in each pocket. Place 1 oz ham and 1/4 cup cheese in each pocket.
  • Heat griddle or skillet over medium heat (350°F); melt butter on griddle. Dip bread in egg mixture, coating both sides. Place bread on hot griddle; cook about 5 minutes, turning once, until golden brown.
  • Cut French toast in half diagonally; sprinkle with powdered sugar.

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1 teaspoon whole caraway seeds
Pepper to taste
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
4 to 6 slices white or whole wheat bread, toasted
4 to 6 slices cooked turkey, chicken, beef or ham, optional
Chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium high heat. Stir in flour to form a smooth paste. Gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir until the mixture is smooth and thickened. Add the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, caraway and pepper. Stir until well blended. Add the cheese; cook and stir over low heat until melted., Cut toast diagonally and place on individual plates. If desired, top each with a slice of meat. Spoon cheese sauce over meat and toast. Sprinkle with parsley. Serve immediately.
