Chicks in a Blanket image

Made with mini smoked chicken-and-apple sausage links, Chicks in a Blanket are an update to the classic party bites. These dough-wrapped chicken-apple sausages are best fresh from the oven, so bake one batch at a time and serve warm.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (8-oz.) can refrigerated crescent rolls
1 (12-oz.) package mini smoked chicken-and-apple sausages (24 links)
Parchment paper
1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)
1 tablespoon fennel seeds (optional)
Spicy Mustard Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Unroll crescent rolls; separate into triangles. Cut each triangle into 3 long triangles.
  • Place 1 sausage link on wide end of each triangle; roll up triangles around sausages, starting at wide end. Place, point sides down, on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Brush rolls with egg yolk. If desired, stir together sesame seeds and next 2 ingredients, and sprinkle over rolls.
  • Bake at 375° for 14 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with Spicy Mustard Sauce.
  • Note: We tested with Aidells Chicken & Apple Sausage Minis.

1 17.3-ounce package frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed
3 tablespoons (about) whole grain Dijon mustard
4 fully cooked chicken and apple sausages or chicken andouille sausages (about 12 ounces), each link cut crosswise into 8 rounds
1 large egg
2 teaspoons milk

Steps:

  • Unfold 1 puff pastry sheet on lightly floured work surface; pierce all over with fork. Cut pastry into four strips, each about 2 1/2 inches wide, then cut each strip into 4 squares for total of 16. Spread 1/4 teaspoon mustard in center of 1 square. Place 1 sausage round atop mustard, pressing slightly to anchor. Fold 2 opposite corners of pastry square over sausage, overlapping slightly, and press to seal. Place sealed side down on ungreased rimmed baking sheet. Repeat with remaining pastry, mustard, and sausage rounds, placing half on second baking sheet. Do ahead Can be made 8 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Whisk egg and milk in small bowl to blend for glaze. Turn pastries right side up and brush with glaze. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F and continue baking until pastry is puffed and golden, about 12 minutes longer. Transfer to platter and serve warm.

  • Place 1 link sausage at bottom end of phyllo; roll tightly. Trim excess dough; cut into 4 pieces. Transfer to prepared pan, seam-side down; repeat with remaining phyllo and sausages.
  • Bake until phyllo is golden brown, flipping once halfway through, 15 minutes. Turn each chick in blanket on its side; sprinkle a few pieces cheese over each and bake until cheese melts, 2-3 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.
