Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 bag Apple Rings
1 (10 ounce) bag dark chocolate melts
3/4 cup white chocolate melts (1/2 bag)
3 Oreo cookies
8 almond slivers
8 mini googly candy eyes
16 large googly candy eyes
8 chocolate chips
48 (2 inch) pieces of black lace licorice

Steps:

  • Sandwich the apple rings between paper towels and pat dry.
  • Crush 1 cookie into fine crumbs. Remove the filling from the other two cookies and cut each piece in half for wings.
  • Use a knife to cut a small slit in the bottom of the apple rings and insert a lollipop or popsicle stick. Use the paper towels to dry the juice off.
  • Melt the dark chocolate according to the package directions.
  • For the spiders, add the eyes and crushed cookies while the chocolate is still wet. Dip the ends of the licorice strings in chocolate and attach to the top of the apple rings. This works better if you wait for the chocolate on the apple rings to set up slightly. You also may need to hold the leg for a few seconds before it is able to stand by itself. Add a little bit of crushed cookie over the chocolate dipped end to make it blend in better.
  • For the bats, add the eyes and wings while the chocolate is still wet. Wait to add the chocolate chips and almond slivers until the chocolate has set up.
  • Dip the tips of the almonds and the bottom of the chocolate chips in the chocolate and press to attach them to your bats.
  • For the mummies, place the dipped apple rings on the tray and press the eyeballs in while wet. After you have dipped all 4 rings, spoon the remaining chocolate into a baggie and cut a small tip off. Drizzle randomly over the tops of the rings to create mummy strips.
  • To serve these fun chocolate dipped Halloween apple rings, press the sticks into pot filled with styrofoam or wrap them up in plastic baggies and a bright colored string.

CHOCOLATE APPLES

Make these chocolate apples as a treat for a kids' party. Great for Bonfire Night or Halloween, cover in chopped nuts, sprinkles and honeycomb pieces

Provided by Good Food team

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

200g milk chocolate, finely chopped
4 small eating apples
sugar strands, finely chopped nuts, sprinkles, honeycomb pieces
50g of each white and dark chocolate, chopped (optional)
4 skewers, wooden chopsticks or large lolly sticks

Steps:

  • Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of just simmering water, being careful that the bowl doesn't touch the water. Stir frequently for 10 mins until completely melted, smooth and shiny. Remove from the heat. Alternatively, heat the chocolate in short bursts in the microwave, stirring between each burst, until melted.
  • Put the apples in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water from the kettle. Drain carefully, and wash under hot water to remove any residual wax on the skin. This helps the chocolate stick better. Pat dry with kitchen paper, remove the stalks and push a lolly stick or skewer in its place.
  • Line a baking tray or large board with baking parchment. Hold the apples by their sticks and dunk into the melted chocolate. Use a spoon to coat the tops of the apples if you like. Once the apples are completely coated, hold over the bowl for a few seconds for excess chocolate to drip back into it, then place, stick pointing up, onto the prepared tray. Leave to set for a minute or two.
  • Tip the decorations into separate bowls. When the chocolate on the apples is just starting to set but not fully firm, sprinkle the decorations onto the apples. Hold them on their side and rotate using the stick to completely cover. Place back on the tray and leave until completely set.
  • If using the white and dark chocolate to decorate, heat each separately, as you did the milk chocolate in step 1, then leave to cool slightly. Melt the dark chocolate first, then when the chocolate apples are set hard, use a teaspoon to drizzle this over them, again holding the stick so the apple is on its side and rotating the apple. Have a sheet of baking parchment underneath to catch any drips. Place back on the tray and leave to set, then repeat the process using the white chocolate. Will keep in an airtight container in a cool place for two days.

  • Wash the apples and dry well. Cut the apples into almost 0.5-0.6 inch thick slices. Don’t cut thinner than ½ inch as it may be hard to insert the sticks in the next step.
  • Place the apple slices on a paper towel to let them dry as much as they can. Make a small slit to the bottom of the slices so you can insert the wooden sticks easily.
  • Melt the chocolate over bain-marie. Place a medium saucepan(that is large enough to hold a heatproof bowl) with almost 1.2 to 2 inches (3-5cm) of water over med-high heat and bring to a simmer. When it simmers, reduce the heat to medium and place the heatproof bowl that is full of chopped semi-sweet chocolate over the saucepan. Make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the simmering water if it does you should reduce the water amount.
