These Apple Fritter Rings are a delicious fall treat you can easily make at home with just a handful ingredients and time!

2 cups vegetable oil
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cups milk
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 egg
1 tablespoon oil
4 medium apples (peeled, cored and cut into 1/2 inch thick rings)

Steps:

  • Prep: Slowly heat the 2 cups vegetable oil in a deep cast iron skillet or prepare the deep fat fryer. Set a plate next to your fryer with a thick layer of paper towels. Mix the sugar and cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating in a medium bowl and set it next to the paper towel lined plate. Add a large plate for the finished fritters.
  • Make apple fritter batter: In a large bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Add the milk, maple syrup, egg and 1 tablespoon oil and whisk until a thick and smooth batter forms.
  • Check the oil: Check if your oil is hot enough by dropping a small amount of batter into it. If the batter browns and quickly floats to the surface you're ready to go!
  • Fry the apples: Using metal tongues coat an apple ring with batter and gently drop it into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden and puffy. Remove from the oil and quickly drain on the paper towels. Toss it in the cinnamon sugar mixture while still warm and set aside on the plate. Proceed in the same way with the remaining apple slices until the entire batter has been used. Depending on the size of your skillet or fryer you can do multiple rings at the same time.

1 quart vegetable oil for deep-frying
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 cups apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup cinnamon sugar

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or electric skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Pour in the milk, eggs and oil and stir until well blended. Mix in apples until they are evenly distributed.
  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden on both sides, about 5 minutes depending on the size. Fry in smaller batches so they are not crowded. Remove from the hot oil using a slotted spoon and drain briefly on paper towels. Toss with cinnamon sugar while still warm.

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar, divided
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
Kosher salt
1 1/2 cups cold beer (preferably lager or pilsner)
3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
2 Honeycrisp or other firm sweet-tart apples, peeled, cored, sliced into scant 1/4"-thick rings (8-10 rings per apple)

Steps:

  • Fit a wide heavy pot with candy thermometer. Pour in oil to a depth of 2" and heat over medium-high until thermometer registers 375ºF.
  • Meanwhile, whisk flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 3/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 1 1/4 tsp. salt in a large bowl. Add beer in a slow, steady stream, whisking until smooth.
  • Whisk pepper, cardamom, 1/8 tsp. salt, and remaining 3/4 cup sugar and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  • Working with 4-5 slices at a time, dip apples in batter, shaking off excess. Fry until golden, about 1 1/2 minutes on each side. Transfer fritters with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. Immediately toss in spiced-sugar mixture and serve warm.

1/2 cup self raising flour
2 tablespoons caster sugar
cold water (icy cold)
2 apples (pink lady recommended, cored and sliced)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon (ground)
60 g butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup cream (pouring)

Steps:

  • Fritters - pour oil into a medium saucepan until one-third full.
  • Heat over medium high heat until hot.
  • Combine the flours and sugar with enough ice cold water to make a batter the consistency of thickened (doubled) cream.
  • Coat the sliced apples in the batter and deep fry in batches for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden, remove to a wire rack to drain.
  • Cinnamon Sugar - combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Caramel Sauce - combine the butter and sugar in a small saucepan, place over medium heat and cook 3 - 4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved, stir in the cream and simmer for 2 - 3 minutes until sauce thickens.
  • Place the fitters on serving plates, sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar, pour over caramel sauce and enjoy.

Remember to check the oil temperature a few times while you are making the batter.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices. In a medium bowl, mix the buttermilk, eggs, butter, and vanilla until well blended. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, add the apples, and, using a large spoon or a spatula, mix it all together in a few swift strokes.
  • Once the batter is ready, set up your work area. Put out a paper towel lined plate or baking sheet next to the frying pot. Mix together the cinnamon sugar ingredients in a wide bowl so you can roll the fritters around in it. And put out a baking sheet with a cooling rack over it for the finished fritters.
  • Check the oil temperature. Once it's at 350F, begin making the fritters. Using a spoon or a cookie scoop, carefully drop tablespoon amounts of batter into the hot oil.
