Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Beef     Swiss Steak Recipes

Time 1h45m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 11

¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
2 pounds beef round steak, cut 1-inch thick
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
¼ cup water, or as needed
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
½ cup minced green bell pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Stir flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper together in a bowl. Sprinkle pieces of steak with flour mixture and pound the flour mixture into the meat with a meat mallet or the edge of a sturdy plate.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat; cook the floured beef in the hot oil until browned on both sides, about 15 minutes. Reduce heat to low, pour in water, cover skillet, and simmer beef until tender, about 1 hour. Add more water to the skillet if needed to prevent burning.
  • Mix diced tomatoes, green bell pepper, onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper in a bowl. Pour tomato mixture over beef, bring to a simmer, and cook until sauce has thickened, about 30 more minutes.

SWISS STEAK

Swiss Steak image

This is something I put together myself without a recipe from anywhere that we just love. I make it fairly often and serve it with baked or mashed potatoes or french fries or rice. I also serve it with a salad and a vegetable. A really quick and easy meal.

Provided by Anna Mae Kantor

Categories     Steaks and Chops

Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 to 1 1/2 lb 1/2 inch cut of anykind of steak (chuck, round, bottom round or london broil)
1 pkg lipton beefy onion or beefy mushroom soup mix
20 oz water
1 can(s) sliced mushrooms (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Spray oven pan with Pam or other cooking spray to make cleanup easier. The pan should be large enough to let the meat lay in the bottom. (I even put it in the pan right out of the freezer------frozen !~)
  • 2. Pour water over the meat. Sprinkle one envelope of dry soup mix over the meat with the bulk of it going into the water as this will make a gravy for your potatoes or rice. Save the other envelope for the next time you make this recipe.
  • 3. Bake for about 1 hour to 1 1/4 hours at 350 degrees. You will be able to tell when it's done.
  • 4. If I'm making baked potatoes, I put them in the oven when I place the meat in. Enjoy !!

SWISS STEAK RECIPE

Swiss Steak Recipe image

This was one of the favourite meals my mother made for us when I was growing up. I made it for my own family as well and my children still request it when I have an opportunity to cook for them. It goes wonderfully with mounds of fluffy mashed potatoes.

Provided by Marie

Categories     Dinner

Time 2h50m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 ½ pounds of beef round steak, cut into serving sized pieces
½ cup of all-purpose flour
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 TBS butter
1 TBS canola oil
1 fat clove of garlic, peeled and crushed
2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced
4 cups of canned plum tomatoes in tomato juice, undrained
1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
A splash of hot sauce (optional)

Steps:

  • Season the pieces of steak all over with some salt and pepper. Sprinkle with flour and pound the flour into the steak using the side of a bread and butter plate. Keep doing this on both sides of the pieces of steak until no more flour can be absorbed. This is what makes the meat meltingly tender.
  • Melt the butter and canola oil together in a large deep skillet. Brown the pounded and floured pieces of steak in the hot fat on both sides, working in batches until all of the meat is browned, and removing to a plate as it is done.
  • Add the onions to the pan drippings and sauté until they are beginning to soften. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds then pour in the tomatoes, along with their juices, and the Worcestershire sauce. I like to break the tomatoes up roughly with my hands.
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper, and hot sauce if desired. Return the steak to the pan, submerging it in the tomato sauce.
  • Cover tightly and simmer over a low heat for 1 ½ to 2 hours at which time the steak will be very tender and the sauce nicely thickened. Check it periodically to make sure there is enough liquid in the pan. If you think that it needs more, feel free to add a bit of beef stock or hot water.

2012-01-30 This is a rich and tender swiss steak with plenty of hearty vegetables. A definite must for me - is the mashed potatoes, but it is also very good served over thick buttered noodles or rice. Make sure you plan ahead, because it does take a bit of time to prepare and at least 1 1/2 hours to simmer in order to get the beef tender. I usually use between 1-1 1/2 lbs of steak…

  • Add one or two pieces of the steak to the bag. Shake, shake, and shake some more! It’s equally important to make sure that the cubed steak is evenly coated with flour so when you take the steak out of the bag, shake the meat to take off any excess flour.
  • Melt a few tablespoons of butter in your slow cooker pan or fry pan. When the pan is hot add two or three pieces of the tenderized steak in a single layer. Definitely add little pats of butter around the steak when cooking to keep the pan from drying up.

  • Place meat in slow cooker. (I recommend a large oval crockpot or the Ninja 3-in-1 cooking system for this recipe.)
  • Add tomatoes, coconut milk, garlic, Italian seasoning, sea salt, and pepper to large mixing bowl. Mix ingredients well with hand mixer. If you have an immersion blender and like a very smooth sauce without chunks of tomato, you can use that. I recommend using it for about 30 seconds to further blend the mixture.
