Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat an 8-inch-square baking dish with cooking spray. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and onion 5 to 7 minutes, or until browned; drain off excess liquid. Stir in spaghetti sauce and pepper; heat 2 minutes. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, and salt; mix well. In the baking dish, layer half the noodles, half the meat mixture, half the cream cheese mixture, and all the spinach. Repeat layers with noodles, meat mixture, and cream cheese mixture. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, or until heated through. Remove foil, sprinkle with cheese, and bake 5 more minutes, or until cheese is melted.
BUSY DAY HOTDISH
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.
- Heat a medium Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the butter, and once it melts, add the beef and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt. Cook, crumbling with a wooden spoon, until browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the bell pepper and scallions (saving a handful of the greens for garnish) and cook until the vegetables begin to wilt, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the paprika and several grinds of pepper, then stir to coat the beef in the spices. Stir in the corn.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef and stir to incorporate. Cook and stir until the flour begins to toast, about 2 minutes. Add the broth and cream gradually while stirring. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickens, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the parsley, mustard, dill and thyme. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange the curly fries in a tight layer over the top. Sprinkle with the cheese. Bake until the cheese and fries are crispy and the sauce is bubbly, about 40 minutes. Sprinkle with the reserved scallion greens and serve hot.
MEXICAN HOTDISH
This is a Midwestern version of Mexican lasagna. It's easy to prepare and even easier to tailor to your taste. Alter this by using different types of Doritos®, chiles, and by adding additional seasoning to spice it up. Serve with pico de gallo and sour cream.

MARIANNE'S HOT DISH
This is a twist on Tater Tot® hot dish. This is an easy recipe to personalize. You can use any ground meat or a mixture of beef and pork. I often use smoked Gouda cheese, Havarti cheese, and I bet Swiss cheese would be good, too. The vegetable can be easily switched to any vegetable you like (string beans, broccoli, or mixed veggies). I would use fresh or frozen rather than canned if you can.

- Tater Tot Casserole. Tater tot casserole, also known as hot dish, is a midwestern classic that you’d be likely to find on Deputy Molly Solverson’s table in season one.
- Easy, Creamy Beef and Shells. Not quite Hamburger Helper, this one-skillet dinner is similar to one that Peggy Blumquist might have made for her husband Ed in season two.
- Sloppy Joes. Sloppy Joes are North Dakota’s unofficial state sandwich (despite originating in Iowa), so it isn’t hard to image that Ed Blumquist might have brought home “leftover minced meat” from the butcher shop, and Peggy would have made it into loose meat sandwiches.
- Gooey Butter Cake. Gooey buttery cake is a German bakery specialty that came about in the 1930s by accident, but lived on to be beloved in St Louis and beyond.
- Pulled Pork. Pulled pork is a Kansas City staple we absolutely hope to see in Fargo‘s next season. Not only is it delicious and perfect for feeding a crowd, but you can hide plenty of “accidents” under all that sauce.
- Light, Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes. Diners have appeared across all three seasons so far, but none more notably than the Waffle Hut where Rye loses it in season two and takes out a cook, waitress, and a judge.
- Easiest-Ever Jiffy Corn Casserole. You might have seen something like this on the menu at Lou’s Coffee Shop in season one — but we love it because it’s simple and filling and easy to make.
- Smoked Ribs. A nod to the Kansas City location of Fargo‘s fourth season: smoky meaty ribs get a dry rub before cooking, and then slathered with a thick sauce.
- A Killer Strawberry Milkshake. The image of the milk and blood running together after Rye kills the judge was incredibly haunting. You can raise a glass to the image with this killer strawberry version — that we guarantee tastes better.
- Deep-Dish Cabbage and Farro Casserole. Rich cabbage and red sauce hide farro in a deep dish casserole, which might not be as outwardly Midwestern as some other dishes here but reminds me of a dish Floyd Gerhardt might have made for her family.
