TURON (SWEET FRIED BANANA SPRING ROLLS)

Turon (Sweet Fried Banana Spring Rolls) image

These are famous sweet Filipino snacks sold in sidewalks. Very simple to make and a traditional comfort food for many households. Basics would just be the bananas, sugar and wrapper but adding the jack fruit makes all the difference and is preferred by most. Note: There are different types of spring roll wrappers. Get the non-translucent ones, if ever.

Provided by Pneuma

Categories     Dessert

Time 20m

Yield 12 rolls, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

6 plantains, ripe and each cut lengthwise
12 spring roll wrappers, non-translucent or 12 egg roll wrappers or lumpia skins
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
6 slices jackfruit, cut lengthwise (optional)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon starch
1 cup oil, for deep frying

Steps:

  • place a sliced banana 1 1/2 inch from the bottom edge of a spring roll wrapper, sprinkle it with some sugar and cinnamon, and top it with a sliced jack fruit.
  • seal the sides and roll the wrapper, sealing the top as well with water/starch mixture.
  • In the meantime, heat oil in non-stick wok(so sugar doesn't stick) until it's sizzling hot with the leftover sugar and fry the wrapped bananas until it's golden brown, spooning (or use spatula) the sugar from the pan on the wrapper to give it a bit of caramelized coating.
  • Drain on paper towels or sieve.
  • Serve while still warm and the wrapper's crunchy.

BANANA LUMPIA

Banana Lumpia image

Simple, deep-fried banana dessert. I'm unsure of cooking time because I've never timed myself. I use frozen lumpia wrappers I find at my local Asian store. P.S. This is great with ice cream.

Provided by Mina

Categories     World Cuisine Recipes     Asian

Time 30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 5

oil for deep frying
¼ cup brown sugar, or as needed
6 large bananas, halved crosswise and then lengthwise
24 lumpia wrappers, defrosted
1 tablespoon water, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place brown sugar in a shallow bowl. Roll each banana quarter in the brown sugar until coated. Wrap a lumpia wrapper around each coated banana, sealing the last edge to the roll using a spoon or your finger dipped in water. Repeat with the remaining bananas and wrappers.
  • Working in batches, fry lumpia in the hot oil until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer cooked lumpia to a paper towel-lined plate using a slotted spoon. Some sugar may leak out the sides of the lumpia while cooling.

Filipino Turon - Fried Banana Egg Rolls Recipe - (4.2/5) image

Provided by kayjayjohnson

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 bananas, each banana sliced into 8 pieces
16 egg roll wrappers, I use spring roll or gluten-free egg roll wrapper for gluten-free version
2 to 3 cups coconut oil, enough to cover bananas, use canola oil as a substitute
Sugar, to taste
Water, for sealing

Steps:

  • Slice each banana in half, then cut each piece into quarters. Lay out one egg roll wrapper on a clean surface. Place a banana piece on wrapper near bottom edge and sprinkle about a teaspoon of sugar on top. Roll sugared banana in wrapper once, then turn in edges and keep rolling. Seal the opposite edge with water. Deep fry at 350°F until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.

  • Heat 1 1/2 to 2 inches of oil in a pan or wok on medium-low heat. You don’t want too much oil, just enough to cover about half of the banana.
  • Once the oil is warm, liberally sprinkle in half of brown sugar and wait until the sugar starts to caramelize.
  • Carefully add the bananas into the hot oil on top of the caramelized brown sugar and begin to fry. After about a minute, start turning the bananas. Sprinkle a little bit of sugar on top of the bananas and in the surrounding oil and fry for about a minute more. Turn again continue with this process until you have added all of the brown sugar. Then, continue to turn every minute or two, so that they fry evenly. The goal here is to cook the bananas until they are golden and completely coated in the caramel. The cooking time will vary depending on the size of your bananas, but ours usually take about 8-10 minutes total.
