This Gerber Sandwich is a St Louis classic. In basic terms it's a ham and cheese sandwich, but in reality it is so much more than that! This open faced sandwich is quick and easy to make with just a handful of ingredients, it's too good not to try!

½ cup butter (melted)
2 teaspoons garlic powder (or minced garlic)
1 loaf french bread (halved)
12 slices ham (sliced thin)
6 slices provel cheese (sliced thin - can substitute mozzarella or provel)
½ teaspoon paprika (or red pepper)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Place the French bread halves on a lined baking sheet.
  • In a measuring cup, mix butter and garlic. Spread onto french bread.
  • Top with ham and cheese.
  • Sprinkle a touch of paprika or red pepper.
  • Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown and cheese is gooey.

Number Of Ingredients 6

piece of the French or Italian bread: 6 inch
Butter: 3 tsp
clove of crushed garlic: 1
slices of ham: 5
slices provolone cheese: 2
paprika to taste

Steps:

  • Take the bread and slice it long ways and put in a small tray. Take butter in a small bowl, add in some crushed garlic and mix thoroughly, until a smooth paste is formed. Spread the thick paste uniformly all over the bread, making sure to apply some extra on the edges. Once you are done with the spreading, add a layer of ham slices on the sliced loaf. Now for the stretch effect coat the sandwich with slices of provolone cheese. Give it the final touch by sprinkling paprika over it. Broil the entire sandwich open faced, on top rack of an oven until the cheese melts and starts turning brown and crispy. Your Berger sandwich is ready to be served with your favorite dips. Trivia The Berger sandwich was first served by a local-family owned Ruma's Deli. It's named after Dick Gerber, who lived next to the shop. He used to prepare his meal in that deli. Mr. Gerber impressed the owners with his unique sandwich recipe so much that they decided to include the sandwich in their menu.

2 slices brown bread
1 tablespoon chutney
2 slices cheddar cheese
2 slices white bread
1 tablespoon wholegrain mustard
2 slices ham
2 slices white bread
1 tablespoon cream cheese
2 slices smoked salmon
fresh dill
2 slices granary bread
1 tablespoon butter
¼ cucumber, peeled, cut into slices
salt
pepper

Steps:

  • While the tortes are chilling, get started on the sandwiches.
  • Assemble each sandwich and cut off the crusts.
  • Lay out on a plate and leave to chill in the fridge.
  • Enjoy!

3/4 pound deli ham

1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
3 drops liquid smoke

Steps:

  • For the cheese Toss the cheeses with the liquid smoke in a medium bowl. Cover until ready to use. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt a half stick of butter and add garlic to taste. Slice French bread in half lengthwise and then place open face on a cookie sheet. Spread butter on bread. Add a layer of ham. Add a layer of provel. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
