HIBISCUS "ANTI-KOOL AID" TEA

Hibiscus

I know the name sounds a bit funny, but there's a story behind it. I found this little bag of Kool Aid packets up in my cabinet and decided to use them up so they wouldn't be taking up space anymore. Now, I've never really been fond of the taste of Kool-Aid; it always seemed to me to be lacking in flavor such that you had to make up for it with tons of sugar. It also stains worse than any other drink I've ever had to deal with (including hibiscus!). Well, being less than pleased with Kool-Aid, I decided to make a tea blend that was sort of similar to Kool Aid's Punch/Cherry/Strawberry flavors, but better. Also, since my recipe is made of herbal tea ingredients, it's probably healthier than Kool Aid in some way... Anyway, this hibiscus tea is the fruit of my labor. Maybe this blend would be good for someone who wants to cut back on their Kool Aid intake? Just note that it is much better chilled than it is warm. Note: I've listed things in teaspoons because this website won't let me list it in parts, but it's technically in a ratio, so you can make whatever quantity you want.

Time 15m

Yield 1-2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 teaspoons dried hibiscus flowers
2 teaspoons rose hips
1/2 teaspoon orange peel
1/2 teaspoon coriander seed
1/2 teaspoon lemon verbena
1/4 teaspoon spearmint
1/4 teaspoon dried rose petals

Steps:

  • Assemble all the ingredients and place in a tea ball. Note: If you don't own a tea ball, then you can put the ingredients directly in the water and then strain out later.
  • Place tea ball in hot water and steep for 10 minutes.
  • Add sweetener as needed.
  • Note: this quantity of tea is actually enough to make about 2 quarts of tea.

HIBISCUS TEA

Hibiscus Tea image

Hibiscus is an incredibly sour herb! When I first bought this hibiscus I tried out several recipes and they were all incredibly sour. That's great if you like sour, but I really couldn't stand it. I really like the flavor of the hibiscus, but not the sourness. I was about to give up in defeat and throw out my dried hibiscus, but I decided to give my tea experimentations one more go. Basically, I came up with this success - the perfect ratio of the right ingredients! This recipe retains the flavor of hibiscus, but none of the sourness! It is definitely best chilled as chilling seems to cut down some of the sourness (although this recipe isn't too sour to begin with). If you make this and chill it, it tastes a bit like Kool-aid, but better in the flavor and infinitely healthier! Note: I've listed things in teaspoons because this website won't let me list it in parts, but it's technically in a ratio, so you can make whatever quantity you want.
