- Unplug the Trimmer. You don't want the trimmer to switch on by mistake while you're working, so pull the extension cord off the plug on the trimmer handle.
- Remove the Spool. Grasp the two tabs on either side of the trimmer head and squeeze them together. This will free the spool retainer and allow you to lift it off the trimmer head.
- Prepare Two Lengths of String. Unravel about 12 feet of line from the package and cut them into two identical 6-foot lengths using a pair of scissors.
- Wind the Two Lengths Separately. The spool is divided into an upper and lower section by a plastic divider, and there's an anchor hole in the hub in each section.
- Replace the Spool. Feed the ends of the two lengths of string through the holes in the trimmer head and set the spool back in place on the shaft inside the trimmer head.
- Free the Strings. The string won't advance unless you remember to pull it out of the notches. To do this, grasp both lengths and pull them outward at the same time until you feel them unsnap from the notches.

- Pull the electric extension cord out of the electrical port on the Homelite String Trimmer; this will prevent any accidental starts when you replace the line.
- Pull the spool up out of the head. Take off any remaining line fragments still left on the spool. Measure one 18-foot section of trimmer line, and cut it off the reel.
- Thread the first line into the anchor hole on the upper part of the spool. Wind the line around the spool counterclockwise in a tight, even manner.
- Thread the second line into the bottom anchor hole below the first. Wind the line counterclockwise, and put the last 6 inches into the holding slot on the opposite side.
- Thread the line through the eyelets while pushing the spool down into place inside the head. Pull up on the lines to free them from the slots, and press the spool retainer down until the tabs snap into place.

- Ensure that the trimmer is shut off and disconnected from all power. If the model is a gas-powered weed eater, remove the spark plug to avoid accidental startup.
- Push in the tabs on the side of the spool retainer, and pull the spool upward to remove it from the trimmer head.
- Place the first string into the anchor hole on the top half of the spool. Wrap the string counterclockwise around the spool. Stop winding when the spool has filled to 1/4 inch from the top.
- Repeat Steps 5 and 6 with the second piece of line, this time using the bottom anchor hole and the lower half of the spool.
- Place the spool into the trimmer head, and thread the ends of the line through the two eyelets. Pull the strings tight through the eyelets so that they are released from their holding slots.
- Install the spool retainer by pushing in on its sides and inserting it into the the trimmer head until it clicks in place. Advertisement. references.
