You'll love this honey bread recipe. The bread is soft and has a great flavor. (Not too sweet!) You can make it with ingredients you probably have on hand.

1 ¼ cup water
¼ cup honey
4 ¼ cups bread flour
2 ½ Tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons salt
2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast

Steps:

  • This is a recipe for a two-pound bread machine. Use the basic, white setting for this recipe.
  • Follow the instructions that came with your bread machine in terms of which order to add ingredients to your bread machine. I use a Zojirushi Bread Machine, so I add the liquids first.
  • Check on the dough after five or ten minutes of kneading. It should be a smooth, round ball. This is especially important on this recipe. I used the recipe as stated and everything was fine. However, several readers have reported that they needed to add a little more water.

10 ounces barley flour, approximately 3 cups
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 ounce baking powder, approximately 2 1/2 tablespoons
2 tablespoons honey
1/4 cup canola oil, plus extra for pan
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk

Steps:

  • Preheat a gas grill on low heat for at least 10 minutes.
  • Lightly rub the sides and bottom of a 4 to 5-quart Dutch oven with canola oil and set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, 1/4 cup oil, eggs and milk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared Dutch oven; do not cover with a lid. Place the Dutch oven on the grill and close the lid of the grill. Cook with the lid shut for 35 to 40 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 190 degrees F. Allow to cool in Dutch oven for at least 5 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack.
  • *Cook's note: For baking in a traditional oven, bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the bread reaches an internal temperature of 190 degrees F.

½ cup milk
½ cup water
1 egg
2 ½ tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon dry black beans
1 tablespoon dry lentils
1 tablespoon dry kidney beans
1 tablespoon barley
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
¼ cup millet flour
¼ cup rye flour
¼ cup cracked wheat
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Steps:

  • Place milk and water into a microwave-safe glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave for 35 seconds. Pour mixture into bread machine. Add egg, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and honey.
  • Grind black beans, lentils, kidney beans, and barley in a coffee grinder until fine. Combine grounds, unbleached flour, whole wheat flour, millet flour, rye flour, cracked wheat, wheat germ, and salt in the bread machine. Add yeast.
  • Set bread machine on dough cycle.
  • Remove and punch down dough once bread machine beeps. Roll dough out onto a pastry cloth. Grease a loaf pan with remaining olive oil. Shape dough into a loaf and place into the prepared pan. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until doubled in volume, about 40 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Uncover dough and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C); bake until browned, 30 to 35 minutes more. Let bread rest in the pan for 10 minutes; remove and let cool until ready to slice.

1 1/4 cups warm milk
1 1/2 tablespoons honey (stir spoon around in warm milk to get all the honey)
1 1/2 tablespoons butter flavor shortening
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 cups white flour
1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast (or amount specified by yeast for 3 cups flour)

Steps:

  • Place ingredients in bread pan in order specified by your manual.
  • Use the white bread and light crust setting.
  • Press start.
  • Your dough should be slightly tacky to the touch and soft when you press down on it, like playdoe when you first open it. If too dry add warm milk 1 teaspoon at a time. If too wet add white flour 1 Tablespoon at a time.

Steps:

  • Place ingredients into bread machine according to machines specifications.
  • Use basic white bread cycle, light crust setting.
  • One tip- To get all your honey out of the measuring cups, stir around in the warm milk.
  • You may also try substituting some flour with dry oatmeal for a Sweet Honey Oatmeal Bread. Just watch your liquid amount, it may need more or less.
