HONEY INFUSED GARLIC (HONEY FERMENTED GARLIC)
honey-infused-garlic-honey-fermented-garlic image
2018-01-02 Honey infused garlic recipe seems like a really good recipe to start 2018 with because of its simplicity and the qualities it has to offer. Sweet and mellow garlic cloves soaked in honey boost our natural immune system, soothe sore throat and help with recovery from cold, flu and common respiratory infections. You can eat the cloves straight from the jar or use the garlic honey to sweeten cold ...

  • Pour honey into the jar making sure all cloves get coated in honey. Cover the jar with a lid (it doesn’t have to be airtight – a little air access is good in this case) and leave on a plate in a dark cupboard. After a few days you might observe air bubbles in your honey garlic mixture, which is a sign of fermentation process taking place. Release the lid to ‘burp’ the gases out every few days to also prevent things spilling out. With time, the fermentation process will settle, garlic will turn a little darker, and the honey becomes a bit more liquid.
  • The best flavour results are achieved after about 4 weeks. After 4 weeks your honey infused garlic is pretty much ready and can be put away to store in your pantry. You can also place the jar in a refrigerator instead as cold, runny honey is lovely and soothing for a sore throat. Don’t forget to test the PH of your honey ferment before consumption! – check recipe notes below for details.

HONEY LEMON COUGH AND COLD REMEDY - GWEN'S NEST
honey-lemon-cough-and-cold-remedy-gwens-nest image
2010-04-04 I experimented with a simple blend of honey, lemon, ‘bruised’ garlic cloves, and smashed ginger root. The sweetness and flavor of the lemon honey masks the strong taste of the garlic cloves, and you just get a hint of spiciness. We use it when we start to feel a cold or sore throat coming on, and to soothe a cough.

  • Our Go to Home Remedy for Cough – Honey and Cinnamon. A spoonful of honey for cough is one of the easiest and best home remedies for cough. In a study comparing the use of honey, dextromorphin and no treatment for coughing children, “parents rated honey most favorably for symptomatic relief of their child's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to upper respiratory tract infection.”
  • Lemon Juice. Lemon juice helps to loosen and clear phlegm. It also gives you a dose of immune boosting vitamin C. See “Vitamin C for Colds – How Much Do You Need and Best Food Sources” for more vitamin C information.
  • Elderberry Syrup. Elderberry syrup is a great home remedy for coughs, especially for kids. We have two different elderberry syrup recipes on the site.
  • Herbal Tea. Hot herbal tea helps to ease congestion, keep you hydrated and soothe irritated tissues. Some of the best herbal teas for cough remedies include
  • Herbal Cough Lozenges. You can purchase herbal lozenges like Ricola, or make your own. The herbs soothe as well as fight the underlying illness. Menthol cough drops numb the throat, which is good for cough suppressing.
  • Steam. Few things are more comforting than a warm, steamy shower for loosening congestion and opening air ways. This is likely to provide only temporary relief, but it sure feels good.
  • Cold Air. We came across this remedy by accident when our youngest had a croupy cough as a baby. During the course of taking him in to the ER one night when he was really miserable, we found that transporting him in the cold air helped to relieve his cough.
  • Herbal Cough Syrup. There are many variations of herbal cough syrup, but this season I've been using Rosemary Gladstar’s “Cough-be-Gone and Sore Throat Syrup”.
  • Peppermint. Sucking on a peppermint candy or sipping a small amount of peppermint schnapps may also help calm a cough. Peppermint tea is another option.
  • Milk and Butter or Golden Milk. Combine 1 cup of warm milk with two tablespoons sweet butter to relieve dry coughs. This works better for a dry, unproductive cough (not much mucus), because it coats and relaxes the throat.

  • Garlic Oil Steam. Boil 1 liter of water and pour it into a pot. Add a few drops of garlic oil to it. Inhale the steam for 10 minutes. Repeat this remedy once in a day.
  • Honey and Garlic Syrup. The anti-inflammatory properties of honey reduce inflammation, swelling and soothe irritation. Enzyme glucose-oxidase found in honey fights against infections.
  • Lemon and Garlic Drink. The acids in lemon break up excess accumulated mucus. It also soothes the pain and inflammation caused by the infection. The natural antiseptic properties of lemon destroy the bacteria and virus that cause throat infection.
  • Garlic Milk. Warm milk provides a soothing and relaxing effect on your throat which is useful for treating dry or raw sore throat. Get a cup of lukewarm milk.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar and Garlic Drink. The high acidic level of apple cider vinegar kills the bacteria responsible for throat infection and sore throat.
  • Licorice Root and Garlic Tea. The anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties for licorice root helps to provide a relief from swelling and irritation.
  • Olive oil and Garlic Syrup. Olive oil coats the irritated walls of the throat and soothes the itchiness in the throat. Its anti-inflammatory components help to reduce inflammation of the tissues in the throat.
  • Ginger and Garlic Mix. The anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of ginger help to heal inflammation and kill infection-causing bacteria, thereby healing sore throat.
