HONEYBEE FONDANT

Honeybee Fondant image

This is fondant (candy) to feed honeybees in the winter. It is not for human consumption (well, it wouldn't hurt you, but, yuck). I like to keep all my recipes in one place!

Provided by Soozaler

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 15m

Yield 5 molds, 5 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup water
5 lbs powdered sugar
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla
cooking spray

Steps:

  • Mix sugar, water, vinegar and vanilla and heat. Do not heat to over 240 degrees. Mix in 1 t Honey Bee Healthy if you have it on hand.
  • Spray smooth paper plates with oil and pour mixture to mold. Let sit a couple of days, then pop out of mold and feed one in between the brood boxes (near wherever all the bees are).
  • Extra plates of fondant can be frozen.

HONEY BEE FONDANT RECIPE USING HONEY – ROCKY MEANDERS
2018-02-23 With a stand mixer, mix the fondant 5 to 10 minutes until it turns white and the temperature is 200 F (100 C). It will probably be too stiff to mix with a hand held mixer or whisk. Alternatively, turn the mixture onto a surface dusted with confectioner’s sugar. Being mindful not to burn your hands, knead the mixture until it is soft and smooth.

Johansson suggests adding glucose, 1 tbsp to 3lbs sugar, in their fondant, but state that "candy makers" use 15% glucose for "excellent" fondant. Some sources suggest using cream of tartar in the recipe, but both of the above point out that acid-inverted sugar is toxic to bees (LE Dills, 1925) and that if inversion is desired then only enzyme inverted sugar should be used.
