This homemade kefir smoothie is the perfect breakfast or snack. It's filled with a ton of probiotics that are good for gut health.

1 c kefir
1/2 c fruit (fresh or frozen strawberries, peaches, blueberries, bananas ...)
1 - 2 Tbsp honey (adjust to taste)
1/2 c ice cubes (optional)
4 c. kefir
1 c. fruit (fresh or frozen strawberries, peaches, blueberries, bananas ...)
4 - 6 Tbsp. honey (adjust to taste - we like them tangy!)
1/2 - 1 c ice cubes (optional)

Steps:

  • Blend all ingredients in a blender just until smooth.
  • Serve and enjoy!

This recipe is my variation of one that came with my yogurt maker. It's easy to create Greek yogurt from this, too! Simply strain the yogurt in a colander lined with fine cheesecloth or coffee filters. Using kefir at the start creates a much more tart yogurt from the start; it tastes a lot like Sana from Europe. You can substitute plain yogurt with live active cultures for the kefir, if desired. Save 1/2 cup of yogurt to use a starter, if desired. Eat yogurt within a week.

4 cups milk
¼ cup instant nonfat dry milk powder, or more to taste
½ cup plain kefir

Steps:

  • Preheat a yogurt maker or slow cooker on Low.
  • Whisk milk and dry milk powder together in a saucepan over medium heat until almost boiling, about 4 minutes. Cool milk to lukewarm (100 to 110 degrees F/38 to 45 degrees C).
  • Gently stir kefir into milk mixture until just blended. Pour mixture into yogurt containers or slow cooker. Cook on Low
  • Cook on Low until desired level of tartness and yogurt consistency is reached, 4 to 10 hours. Chill yogurt in the refrigerator, at least 2 hours.

1 can frozen concentrate juice or 1 can shelf stable concentrate juice (your choice of flavors)
2 cups plain plain yogurt
30 -36 ounces water (your taste)

Steps:

  • Put all ingredients in blender and process to mix.
  • Pour into a container w/ a tight fitting lid.
  • Refrigerate.
  • Shake before pouring (has a tendency to settle and separate).

  • If serving to an infant I add 1/2 yogurt juice to 1/2 water.

I got this recipe from welltellme.com. I started making kefir, but it's quite tangy and this makes it easy to drink and is quite refreshing. You use it when it's runny (thicker than milk though), not thick like yogurt, to make this drink. I used maple syrup and grape juice and it was great!
