There's no need to head out to the malt shop when you have this easy milkshake recipe on hand. The ultimate in retro comfort food, milkshakes are actually very easy to make at home. You need just three ingredients, two steps and 10 minutes to whip up this chocolate milkshake recipe in your blender.

  • In blender, place milk and syrup. Cover and blend on high speed 2 seconds.
  • Add ice cream. Cover and blend on low speed about 5 seconds or until smooth. Pour into glasses. Serve immediately.

1 quart chocolate ice cream or gelato, softened
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1/4 to 3/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper*
6 strawberries
Special equipment: 6 (8-ounce) milkshake glasses

Steps:

  • Place the milkshake glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  • In a 6-cup capacity blender, combine the chocolate ice cream, milk and cayenne pepper.
  • Blend for 15 to 20 seconds until smooth.
  • To serve, divide the milkshake mixture between the frosted glasses. Cut a slit into each of the strawberries and place on the rim of each glass.
  • *Cook's Note: Start with 1/4 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper and increase by 1/4 teaspoon increments until the desired spiciness is reached.

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa (preferably Dutch process)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 tablespoons milk
6 cups vanilla ice cream

Steps:

  • Stir sugar and water in heavy medium saucepan over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and bring to boil. Place cocoa in small bowl. Gradually whisk in sugar syrup. Return mixture to same saucepan. Boil 1 minute, whisking constantly. Pour into bowl. Whisk in vanilla and cool completely. Cover and chill until cold, at least 1 hour. (Syrup can be made 1 week ahead. Keep refrigerated.)
  • Pour 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup and 1 tablespoon milk into blender. Add 1 1/2 cups ice cream and blend until smooth. Pour into glass. Repeat in 3 more batches, using 3 tablespoons syrup, 1 tablespoon milk and 1 1/2 cups ice cream for each milk shake.
