This keto bbq sauce delivers a bold tangy-sweet taste up front bolstered with onion and garlic, then finishes with a gentle heat on the back of the tongue. No added sugars!

Steps:
- Add the first 10 ingredients into a medium saucepan and simmer for 45 minutes (or longer if you prefer a thicker sauce).
- Measure the remaining ingredients into the BBQ sauce and blend with a stick blender (or use a blender) until smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings. Taste the next day and adjust further as it will mellow upon cooling. This results in a tangy sauce. (SEE BELOW FOR A VARIATION.)
- Cool completely, pour into a clean air tight container, and refrigerate up to 10 days.
- VARIATION: Saute the onions and garlic in 1 tbsp butter until softened, then add the rest of the ingredients. Add the remaining butter after cooking. This results in a more mellow flavored sauce.
- Makes 2 1/2 - 3 cups. Serving size is 2 tbsp and is 1 net carb per serving.

- Whisk all ingredients together in a saucepan, adding the water last. Start with a cup of water, then whisk in a bit more at a time, until it reaches a consistency *slightly thinner* than barbecue sauce. I ended up using about 1 1/2 cups of water, but it will vary depending on how thick your tomato paste is.
- Bring to a gentle boil at medium-high heat, then reduce to medium-low. Simmer, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes, or until slightly thickened.
- Taste and adjust sweetener or cayenne pepper if you prefer the sauce to be sweeter or spicier. If it's still thicker than you like, you can stir in additional water, a tablespoon at a time, until reaching desired consistency.

- Add tomato paste and remaining ingredients. Stir until fully combined. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer.
- Let simmer about 15 minutes to incorporate all ingredients and build flavor.
- NOTES*
- If you like a thinner sauce, add a touch more water until desired thickness is reached.
- If you like a more sour sauce, add a little more vinegar.
- Go easy with the liquid smoke, a little goes a long way!
- This recipe is very easily adaptable to different sweeteners. Using a white sweetener will result in a sauce that is more red in color.
- The butter makes a nice glossy finish and helps the sauce adhere to whatever you brush it on.
- Store in pint sized mason jar refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
