MAPLE BARS

Maple Bars image

I don't remember where I got this recipe but it is so good. I get asked to make these and they are always gone fast. You could sprinkle chopped nuts on top of the icing if you wanted. The icing would also be good on a cake.

MAPLE BARS RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Maple Bars Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by Mrs_imUnLawson

Number Of Ingredients 16

Maple Bars
1 1/2 cups milk
1/3 cup shortening (I used butter flavored Crisco)
4 Tablespoons granulated Sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup lukewarm water
2 (1/4 ounce) envelopes yeast
2 large eggs, beaten
5 cups flour (might need a bit more)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Maple Icing 1/3 cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons mapleine (found by the flavor extracts and seasonings)
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • For the dough: In a medium saucepan scald milk; add shortening, 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar, and salt. Stir to combine and set aside to cool to lukewarm. In a large mixer bowl, add the lukewarm water and the yeast (remember the water should be just lukewarm, too hot and it will kill the yeast) Add the remaining 1 Tablespoon of sugar to the yeast and water and whisk to combine. Let sit for about 5 minutes until it starts to bubble and become foamy. After the yeast is foamy and the milk mixture is luke warm. Add the eggs to the yeast and stir to combine, then add the milk mixture to the yeast mixture. Whisk the cinnamon into the flour and gradually add to the yeast mixture. You may need to add more, you want the dough slightly sticky but not too sticky. Knead for 3 to 5 minutes. I let my kitchen aid do the kneading for about 5 minutes. Spray another large bowl with non-stick spray, place dough in the bowl and let raise for an hour or until double in size. Punch down and roll out into a large rectangle about 1 inch thick. Cut into rectangles, I cut the rectangle in half, and then each half into 6 pieces to make 12 bars, then place on a greased baking sheet. Let raise for about 30 minutes. While bars are raising, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Bake the bars for 7 to 8 minutes or until light golden brown, Watch carefully. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before icing. Make the icing while the bars are raising: In a small saucepan mix butter, brown sugar and milk. Bring to boil for medium heat and simmer 3 minutes.l Remove from heat and cool for 15 minutes. Add the mapleine and powdered sugar and blend well with a hand mixer. Add a little more powdered sugar if needed (I added about 1/4 cup more) Spread on maple bars

CANADIAN MAPLE BARS

Canadian Maple Bars image

Found this recipe in November 1996 Family Circle Magazine. Since I Love, Love Maple I simply had to make these delicious bars. I did use my Amber Maple Syrup as I usually do in all recipes calling for Maple Syrup, it imparts a bit stronger maple flavor into everything I make with it, but feel free to use regular Maple Syrup since cost could be a factor if giving as gifts. Since coconut is not everyones favorite ingredient I suppose you could increase the pecans and leave out the coconut, or replace the expensive pecans as I did once with 2 1/2 cups chopped walnuts.(It does affect the taste though) Cooking time is refrigerate time...no baking needed here.

Provided by Chabear01

Categories     Snacks Sweet

Time 6h20m

Yield 48 Bars

MAPLE PECAN BARS

Maple Pecan Bars image

Time 2h30m

Number Of Ingredients 15

Crust:
----------------
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup firmly packed golden brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter cut into 3/4 inch pieces
----------------
Filling:
----------------
6 Tablespoons butter
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2/3 cup firmly packed golden brown sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream
2 cups coarsely chopped pecans
1/2 cup quick cooking oats

Steps:

  • To Make the Crust: ---------------- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F Combine the flour, brown sugar, and salt and mix. Add the butter and using a pastry blender, mix butter into flour mixture until pea sized crumbs form. Line 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper or non-stick foil, letting it extend up the sides of pan. Press the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake the crust until the edges are lightly browned and the top feels firm when lightly touched, 12 - 17 minutes. Set aside. ---------------- To Make the Filling: ---------------- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, maple syrup, and brown sugar and stir together until the butter melts and the brown sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the cream. Then stir in the pecans and oatmeal. Pour the hot filling over the partially baked crust, spreading it evenly to the edges with an icing spatula. Bake at 350F until the filling is set when you give the pan a gentle shake, 22-25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to let cool until firm, about 1 1/2 hours. Using the ends of the paper or foil liner, carefully lift the maple-pecan square in its liner from the baking pan. Loosen the paper or foil from the edges and cut into 20 - 25 small squares. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
