BOOZY MELON THREE WAYS



Boozy Melon Three Ways image

For the ultimate easy, boozy summer dessert, pair different melons with different liquors and top with fresh herbs. We like watermelon with tequila and mint, honeydew with gin and tarragon, and cantaloupe with vodka and basil. Sprinkle each with lime juice and flaky sea salt. Make one or make all three!

2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup tequila
1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
8 cups cubed seedless watermelon
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup gin
1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
8 cups cubed seeded honeydew
1/2 cup fresh tarragon leaves
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup vodka
1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
8 cups cubed seeded cantaloupe
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
Lime wedges and flaky sea salt, such as Jacobsen's, for serving

Steps:

  • Tequila-Soaked Watermelon: Place sugar, tequila, orange liqueur, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Let cool slightly. Arrange watermelon in a single layer in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Pour syrup over fruit. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours and up to 1 day. Serve with mint and a drizzle of syrup; sprinkle with flaky salt and squeeze with lime juice.
  • Gin-Soaked Honeydew: Place sugar, gin, orange liqueur, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Let cool slightly. Arrange honeydew in a single layer in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Pour syrup over fruit. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours and up to 1 day. Serve with tarragon and a drizzle of syrup; sprinkle with flaky salt and squeeze with lime juice.

2 small cantaloupes
3/4 cup cava (Spanish sparkling wine) or other dry sparkling wine
3 tablespoons orange marmalade
1/2 bunch mint, washed and julienned

Steps:

  • Cut off top and bottom poles of melons. Place one cut side against cutting board and slice off rind in segments, cutting smoothly from top to bottom. Repeat with second melon. Halve melons lengthwise and scoop out seeds. Cut flesh into 1inch wedges, then cut wedges crosswise at an angle into diamonds or triangles. In a small bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients. Pour over melon. Stir gently, cover, refrigerate and let macerate for 46 hours. Serve cold.

My daughter had a Melonade at a restaurant out of town, and came home raving about it. The menu gave the ingredients, but it took some experimenting to come up with proportions that matched the taste as she remembered it. I'm not much of a drinker, but I find this refreshing and delicious. I sometimes make mine without the vodka and think it's great as well.

1 cup pineapple chunk (fresh preferred, if canned, drain well)
1 cup green seedless grape
1 cup fresh strawberries, halves

Steps:

  • Combine the lemonade and orange juice concentrate with triple sec, and mix well.
  • In a large bowl, gently stir together all the fruit. Pour the juice mixture over the fruit, and carefully stir.
  • Cover and refrigerate several hours before serving.
