Ingredients

6 slices cooked turkey
6 slices swiss cheese
6 slices lean ham
12 slices bread (use good bread that is not sliced too thin)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cups water
1 large egg
vegetable oil
powdered sugar
raspberry jam
melon (optional)
grapes (optional)
pineapple chunk (optional)

Steps:

Place one slice each of turkey, Swiss cheese, and ham on 6 bread slices.
Top with remaining bread slices and cut into quarters; hold sandwiches together with wooden toothpicks if needed.
-=Batter=- Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Add water to egg and beat slightly. Add egg to flour mixture and beat until smooth.
Dip mini monte cristo sandwich quarters into batter and fry in hot oil until golden brown, turning once.
Remove toothpicks and sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar.
Serve with a side of raspberry jam to dip them inches.

This is from the April 2007 issue of Real Simple magazine. The recipe capitalizes on the convenience of frozen French toast to create this rich and decadent classic sandwich. I like my Monte Cristos served with a little cup of raspberry preserves to dip or spread on each bite.

Ingredients

6 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 (6 count) boxes frozen French toast (12 slices)
1 (9 ounce) package thinly sliced ham
1 (9 ounce) package thinly sliced turkey
12 slices swiss cheese
6 tablespoons butter, at room temperature

Steps:

Heat oven to 400°F.
Spread the mustard on the (still frozen) French toast.
Divide the ham and turkey evenly among 6 pieces of toast and top with 2 slices of cheese.
Top with remaining 6 slices of toast to sandwich together.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Spread 1/2 tablespoon of butter on the top and bottom of each sandwich.
Cook each sandwich in the skillet until brown, 2 minutes per side.
Transfer to a baking sheet.
Bake until the cheese is melted and the toast is heated through, about 4 minutes.
