NEW YORK SOUR MOCKTAIL

New York sour mocktail image

Enjoy a taste of summer with this New York sour mocktail. Flavoured with tea, pomegranate, lemon and maple syrup, it's just as showbiz as the alcoholic version

Provided by Miriam Nice

Categories     Cocktails, Drink

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 tsp assam tea leaves (50ml tea)
few drops of vanilla extract
25ml lemon juice
3 tsp maple syrup
1 tbsp egg white
ice
10ml pomegranate juice

Steps:

  • Pour 150ml boiling water over the tea leaves, stir, then strain straight away. You want a strong, but not stewed tea. Mix in the vanilla extract and leave to cool.
  • Pour the lemon juice, maple syrup and 50ml of the tea into a cocktail shaker. Stir the egg white with a fork to loosen it, then add 1 tbsp to the shaker. Shake well until the mixture is frothy. Add a good handful of ice and shake again.
  • Double strain into a glass filled with ice. Top up the pomegranate juice with water to make 20ml, then slowly pour into the glass. Let it settle for a moment - the juice will float just underneath the egg white foam.

NEW YORK SOUR SHOT

New York Sour Shot image

A wine-spiked whiskey sour, the New York Sour is a potent combination of bourbon, lemon, sugar and sometimes egg whites. Top each of these shots with dry red wine for a more classic experience - both in looks and in taste - or swap out the wine entirely for sweet red vermouth. The slightly more herbal flavor makes up for what it lacks in striking visuals. This alternative float is especially ideal if you don't have or don't want to open a full 750-milliliter bottle of red only to put a few ounces to use. (That's less of an issue if you plan on drinking wine later in the night, but you do you.)

Provided by Rebekah Peppler

Categories     cocktails

Yield 8 shots

Number Of Ingredients 6

Ice
4 ounces bourbon or rye
2 ounces fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 ounces dry, fruity red wine or sweet red vermouth

Steps:

  • In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the bourbon or rye with lemon juice, simple syrup and bitters. Cover and shake until very cold, then strain into 8 small glasses.
  • Working shot by shot, gently pour 1/4 ounce wine (1 1/2 teaspoons) over the back of a small spoon held just above each drink's surface so the wine floats on top.
