BLOOD ORANGE BARS

Refreshing and sweet all at once, our Blood Orange Bars recipe will make you rethink your definition of citrus bars. (Hint: They don't just come flavored by lemons!) Dust with powdered sugar for added sweetness.

1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoon powdered sugar
0.25 teaspoon salt
0.333 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoon finely shredded blood orange peel or orange peel
0.667 cup fresh blood orange juice or orange juice
2 drops red food coloring (optional)
2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
0.25 teaspoon salt
Powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line an 8x8x2-inch baking pan with foil, extending the foil over the edges of the pan. Grease foil; set aside.
  • For crust, in a large bowl stir together the 1 cup flour, the 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press mixture evenly and firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake about 15 minutes or until light golden around the edges.
  • In a medium bowl whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, orange peel, orange juice, and food coloring (if using) until smooth. Stir in the 2 tablespoons flour and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour orange mixture over the hot crust.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Use foil to lift uncut bars out of pan. Place on a cutting board. Cut into bars. Dust bars with powdered sugar*.

1 can (13.9 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury™ Orange Rolls with Orange Icing (8 Count)
Icing from can of sweet rolls
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon orange juice
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 cup sweet orange marmalade
1/4 cup sliced almonds

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400°F. Spray bottom only of 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish with CRISCO® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray.
  • In small bowl, beat egg with fork or wire whisk; stir in yogurt until smooth.
  • Unroll dough on cutting board. Set icing aside. Cut each strip in half crosswise. Dip each strip completely in egg mixture, then twist 2 or 3 times; place in baking dish. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, in 1-quart saucepan, heat icing, butter, orange juice, almond extract and marmalade to boiling over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and shiny. Remove from heat; stir in almonds.
  • Loosen rolls from baking dish with spatula. Drizzle with sauce; serve immediately.

6 large eggs
2-3/4 cups 2% milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/3 cup finely chopped walnuts
SYRUP:
1-1/4 cups maple syrup
1/3 cup orange juice
2 teaspoons grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Spread butter over 1 side of each bread slice. Arrange half of the bread slices overlapping in a greased 3-qt. or 13x9-in. baking dish, buttered side down. Spread marmalade over bread slices; top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up., In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg until blended; pour over bread. Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight., Preheat oven to 350°. Remove casserole from refrigerator while oven heats. Sprinkle with walnuts. Bake, uncovered, until golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 40-50 minutes., Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving. In a small saucepan, combine maple syrup, orange juice and zest; heat through. Serve with casserole.

1 large orange, unpeeled
1 ¾ cups almond flour
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup white sugar

5 eggs
½ cup all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Place orange in a saucepan. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until orange is soft, about 30 minutes. Drain.
  • Cut orange into chunks and discard seeds.
  • Mix almond flour with 2 tablespoons sugar.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch cake pan and coat the pan with a handful of the almond-sugar mixture.

1/2 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons orange juice
1/3 cup light olive oil
3/4 cup finely ground blanched almonds
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur such as Cointreau

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an eight-inch round cake pan.
  • Sift the flour and baking powder together and set aside. Beat the eggs until light, then gradually beat in all but two tablespoons of the sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in three tablespoons of the orange juice, then gradually beat in the olive oil. Stir in the ground almonds and the orange peel, then lightly stir in the flour mixture. Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
  • Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until the cake is golden and a cake tester comes out clean. Remove from oven.
  • Dissolve the remaining sugar in the remaining orange juice and orange liqueur in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook about two minutes, until the mixture turns syrupy. Brush this glaze over the hot cake and allow to cool about one hour. Remove the cake from the pan and serve.

3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 pound butter, softened
3 cups white sugar
3 ounces marzipan
6 eggs
⅓ cup half-and-half
⅓ cup milk
⅓ cup orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 10-inch tube pan.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder, and baking soda together in a bowl.
  • Beat butter and sugar together in a bowl until creamy. Add marzipan. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat half-and-half into butter mixture.
  • Stir 1 cup of flour mixture into the butter mixture. Stir in milk. Add another 1 cup flour mixture to the butter mixture and stir milk into mixture. Add remaining flour mixture and stir in orange juice. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula and give batter a final mix. Pour batter into prepared tube pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 90 minutes.
  • Cool cake in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
