This coffee ring is an old family recipe that's long been a hit with anyone who's tried it. The yeast bread is a great Sunday treat - or the perfect way to kick off your holiday celebration.

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
1-1/4 cups warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
7 tablespoons sugar
4 large egg yolks, room temperature
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon salt
4 to 4-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
TOPPING:
1/2 cup slivered almonds, divided
2/3 cup sugar
4 teaspoons grated orange zest
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Add the sugar, egg yolks, butter, salt and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour., Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 24 pieces; shape into balls. In a shallow bowl, combine sugar and orange zest. , Sprinkle 1/4 cup almonds into a greased 10-in. fluted tube pan. Dip half the balls in melted butter; roll in sugar mixture. Arrange over almonds. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup almonds. Repeat with remaining balls. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. , Bake on lowest oven rack at 350° for 38-42 minutes or until golden brown (cover loosely with foil if browning too quickly). Cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a platter.

Steps:

½ cup margarine
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
½ cup fresh orange juice
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup chopped walnuts

¼ cup white sugar

Steps:

  • Stir together flour, baking powder, salt, and nuts.
  • In a large bowl, beat together butter or margarine and 1 cup sugar. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in rind and 1/2 cup juice. Pour in flour mixture, and stir until moistened. Turn into a greased 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until done. Remove loaf from oven, but not from pan.
  • Combine 1/2 cup orange juice with 1/4 cup sugar in a small saucepan. Heat and stir to dissolve sugar. Spoon glaze over hot loaf. Let stand in pan for 10 minutes before removing loaf to rack to cool.

I was playing around with my grandmother's recipes one morning and found this recipe from my great-grandma. I thought it would be more like a loaf, but it's more like a coffee cake and good. I translated some of the old language into modern measurements and it works well.

3/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 whole orange
2 cups sugar, divided
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup raisins

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375* F.
  • Grease and flour a 9x9 pan.
  • Combine cream and lemon juice and set aside to "sour".
  • Wash the orange well (I usually use a little dish soap and rinse really well). Zest the orange, then juice it. Reserve both the orange zest and the juice.
  • Cream 1 cup sugar and butter until fluffy.
  • Add in soured cream, vanilla, flour, soda and orange zest and mix until just moistened.
  • Mix in raisins just until thoroughly distributed.
  • Scrape batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake 30 min or until toothpick comes out clean.
  • While the cake is baking, mix together the orange juice and remaining sugar and microwave until the sugar is dissolved (this is the glaze).
  • Pour glaze over hot cake and allow to absorb a few min before serving.
  • ENJOY hot or cooled.

3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup whole milk
TOPPING:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in orange juice and zest. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. , Pour into a greased 9-in. square baking dish.
