- Muddle orange rind strip, fresh cranberries, and sugar in a cocktail shaker. Add ice cubes, gin, and fresh orange juice. Cover with lid, and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled (about 30 seconds). Pour into an 8-oz. glass; top with tonic water. Serve immediately.

Steps:
- Bring cranberries, sugar, and water to a simmer in a 3- to 3 1/2-quart saucepan, then simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until berries just begin to pop, about 2 minutes. Drain cranberries in a fine-mesh sieve set over a 1-quart glass measuring cup, then reserve 2 cups cranberries and force remaining berries through sieve into syrup. Discard solids remaining in sieve, then add reserved cranberries to syrup. Cool to room temperature. Transfer to a pitcher and chill until cold, about 2 hours.
- Add remaining ingredients to syrup, stirring gently to combine. Serve drinks over ice in 8- to 10-ounce glasses.
CRANBERRY GIN AND TONIC
This is much easier to prepare than similar cocktails of the same name that require boiling cranberries, oranges and sugar for 20 minutes, and then waiting for the syrup to cool. Instead, this version utilizes readily-made items that are normally kept stocked in a home bar, and it doesn't require cooking or cooling time. We had these at our family's Christmas party this year, and I thought they were so festive and quite refreshing and tasty! This recipe comes from the idrink website.

- Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn down to a simmer-- medium low heat. For 15 minutes let it simmer, the cranberries will start to "pop" and soften.
- Place a fine sieve or small strainer over large mason jar or container, start slowly pouring the simple syrup in the strainer. With the back of a spoon squeeze the juice out of the cranberries left and orange slices. Discard the cranberries and orange pulp occasionally as you continue to strain it.
