PEPPERMINT PATTIES

Peppermint Patties image

I have made these every year as one of many Christmas treats. My family really loves them, it wouldn't be Christmas without them! When you dip, tap the fork on the edge of the pan to shake off excess. Slide the patty onto waxed paper -- you can use the fork to make a little swirl on the top to make it pretty.

Time 2h55m

Yield 28

Number Of Ingredients 5

¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
1 ½ teaspoons peppermint extract
4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
2 teaspoons shortening

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine condensed milk and peppermint extract. Beat in enough confectioners' sugar, a little at a time, to form a stiff dough that is no longer sticky. Form into 1 inch balls, then place on waxed paper and flatten with fingers to form patties. Let patties dry at room temperature two hours, turning once.
  • In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate with shortening, stirring often. Remove from heat. Dip patties, one at a time, into chocolate by laying them on the tines of a fork and lowering the fork into the liquid. Let cool on waxed paper until set.

HOMEMADE PEPPERMINT PATTIES RECIPE

Homemade Peppermint Patties Recipe image

Homemade Peppermint Patties are better than any other peppermint patty I have ever tasted. It's the perfect amount of chocolate and mint. You will love these.

Provided by Camille Beckstrand

Categories     Dessert

Time 2h

Number Of Ingredients 5

¾ cup sweetened condensed milk
1½ teaspoons peppermint extract
4 cups powdered sugar
3 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
2 teaspoons shortening

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract.
  • Beat in the powdered sugar just a little at a time, until a stiff dough starts to form and the dough isn't sticky.
  • Form into 1 inch balls, then place on waxed paper and flatten with fingers to form patties. Let patties dry at room temperature for about two hours (I turned flipped mine over after about 1 hours to make sure they were evenly set on both sides).
  • In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt chocolate with shortening, stirring often (you could also melt the chocolate in the microwave- just do whatever you are comfortable with!).
  • Remove chocolate from heat.
  • Dip patties, one at a time, into chocolate by laying them on the tines of a fork and lowering the fork into the liquid.
  • Let cool on waxed paper until set. Place in the fridge so let them set-up even faster (I actually prefer to eat them straight out of the fridge).

  • Combine powdered sugar, softened butter, peppermint extract and heavy cream together. Using a stand mixer or handheld mixer, mix until it feels soft but not sticky. Add more powdered sugar if needed, it should feel like Play-Doh.
  • Put the dough on to a plastic wrap and shape it into a tube. About the size of your preferred patties. Let them cool in the refrigerator for at least 45 minutes. Use a sharp knife and cut the tube into desired thickness. Cut a few and leave the rest of the tube in the refrigerator in order to keep it as cold as possible.
  • Melt chocolate, preferably over a water bath. Mix with oil if using and let it cool a little* before covering all the patties with chocolate. Dip one patty into the chocolate, flip it over and using a fork or a dipping tool, let the excess chocolate drip off.
  • Let the chocolate peppermint patties firm up on a parchment paper. Once set, place in a cookie jar or airtight container. Keeps for at least 14 days, as if that would be a problem.
