POOR MAN'S LOBSTER

Poor Man's Lobster image

This recipe was told to me by the captain of the boat when halibut fishing. It is a very quick, simple, and tasty way to eat halibut!

Provided by Sheila36

Categories     Halibut

Time 20m

Yield 1-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup sugar
halibut, cut in about 1 inch cubes
butter, for dipping (not margarine)

Steps:

  • Fill a pot with water (about a gallon).
  • Add 1 cup sugar, and bring to a boil.
  • Do not ever stir the mixture.
  • Add chunks of halibut, do not over crowd.
  • They will sink to the bottom, and then rise to the top when they are done.
  • It should take just a few minutes.
  • Remove with slotted spoon.
  • Remember to not stir the mixture.
  • Continue until all the halibut is cooked.
  • Dip in melted butter and eat!

LOBSTER NEWBURG

Use fresh lobster if available, but 2 (6 ounce) cans of lobster may be used instead. This recipe is rich and delicious. If you do not like spicy food, use paprika in place of cayenne pepper. Serve hot, over buttered toast slices.

POORMAN'S LOBSTER NEWBURG

Poorman's Lobster Newburg image

This is a superb entree that won't break the bank and is so easy to prepare. Your guests will love it. I usually use monkfish, which has a lobster-like flavor but you can use any white meaty fish, even tilapia. It takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. Serve with your favorite white wine, rice pilaf, and roasted asparagus.

POOR MAN'S LOBSTER NEWBURG

Poor Man's Lobster Newburg image

This rich and creamy lobster dish can satisfy a seafood lovers palate, without breaking the bank. I bake this in a pie plate and serve alongside of steak, rice and cole slaw; a delicious, cheaper version of "surf and turf". Can be easily served as a main dish.

KETO APPROVED POOR MAN'S LOBSTER - MY KETO RECIPES
2017-08-10 The original recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar but for a ketogenic diet you will want to replace that with either Splenda, Swerve, or stevia. The amounts will be different depending on your taste. You can even omit the sweetener all together if you like. Lobster is a sweeter tasting fish so to make Poor Man’s Lobster you’ll want to add some sweetness to the recipe.

  • Take aluminum foil and wrap your broiler pan in it, then spray with cooking spray. Ensure the foil outlines the grooves on your broiler pan. That way your fish isn't sitting in the liquid on the pan. You can also use a cookie sheet but you'll want to remove excess water after boiling.
  • Place cod in a pot on your stove top. In a bowl mix water, Swerve, and salt, then pour over fish. fish should be fully covered in the pot.
  • Bring contents of pot to a boil over a medium-high heat. Boil for 3 to 5 minutes depending on the thickness of the cod fillet.

  • Melt a cup of butter. Heat your oven to very hot, above 375º if possible. Or if you have a broiler, light that.
  • In your largest pot, boil 6 cups water. Dissolve the sugar and the salt in the boiling water. Take off the heat. Sink the cod filets in the water and let sit, completely submerged for 5 minutes. Remove from water and pat dry.
  • Place the cod filets in a non-stick foil lined shallow pan or jelly-roll pan. Pour the melted butter, reserving 1/4 cup, over the fish and gently roll the filets in the butter, careful not to break apart the filets. Sprinkle with paprika.
