PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM AND ONION BURGER TOPPING

Steps:
- Saute mushrooms and onion in olive oil in large saucepan for 3 to 4 minutes. Add water and cover with lid. Simmer another 3 to 4 minutes. Remove lid and add steak sauce.
- Prepare veggie burgers according to package directions. Serve burger on bun with warm topping.
- ON THE GRILL: Preheat grill. Use a food thermometer to be sure patties reach minimum internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

I've heard of $24 dollar gourmet burgers and such... but you can make this for a whole lot less money and still be in burger heaven... Steps:
- In a large, heavy skillet, melt butter or margarine.
- Cook onions over medium-low heat until golden brown.
- Add the mushrooms and continue cooking until mushrooms are tender.
- Let sit until cool enough to handle.
- In a large bowl, mix the sirloin, salt, pepper, steak sauce, and onion-mushroom mixture.
- Form into 5 burgers.
- In same skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Dredge burgers in flour and cook until desired doneness, turning once.
- Add cheese (if desired) and melt atop burger.
- Top with a dollop of sour cream.

They're so craveable, you may want to eat a second! You do not want to use anything under an 80/20 fat ratio. If you do, they won't be good.

- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add butter and oil; heat until butter is melted. Add onion and garlic. Cook until onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, divide ground meat into 4 portions and shape into patties. Season with salt and seasoning.
- Heat a large skillet or flat-top over medium-high heat for a few minutes. Place patties into the hot skillet and smash with a spatula or bacon press. Hold patties down for 30 seconds, then cover each patty with some of the cooked onion. Cook for 2 minutes. Carefully flip burgers, making sure to scrape the browned bits off the skillet.
- Press down on the flipped patties to sink the onions into the meat.
- Meanwhile, add sliced mushrooms to the skillet used for the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Season patties with salt and pepper and place a slice of cheese on each. Cook until burgers have reached the desired doneness, 2 to 4 minutes more. Top each patty with leftover onion and mushrooms and serve on buns.

TERIYAKI PORTABELLA MUSHROOM BURGER

Steps:
- Place crushed ginger and garlic in a 1 gallon size plastic locking bag.
- Add soy sauce, sweetener and oil to bag, seal and shake well.
- Clean portabello mushrooms by wiping off dirt with a clean damp cloth. Cut off stem end of mushrooms.
- Place mushrooms in bag with soy mixture, reseal and let stand about 15 minutes. Heat nonstick skillet on range on medium high heat.
- Remove mushrooms from bag and place cap side down in hot skillet. Cook 2 to 3 minutes and turn mushrooms. If the skillet is dry add some of the soy sauce from the bag.
- Continue cooking until the skillet is almost dry and sauce caramelizes on mushrooms. Remove skillet from heat.
- Optional: If you do not like the taste of raw onions, you may remove mushrooms from skillet and set aside. Add 1-2 tablespoons of canola oil to skillet on medium heat and sweat sliced onions until translucent and caramelized.
- To assemble the sandwich, spread mayonnaise on each half of the kaiser roll.
- Place 1 lettuce leaf, cut to fit the bun on one half. Place cheese slice on top of lettuce and then 1 tomato slice on top of the cheese.
- On the other half of the bun, place 1 portabella mushroom and either the cooked or raw onion slice on top of the mushroom. Put the two halves of the buns together and enjoy.
