Number Of Ingredients 19

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 lb ground sirloin
1 softball-sized onion, chopped
1/4 cup steak sauce
1 cup beef stock
salt
ground black pepper
4 dinner rolls
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup provolone cheese, shredded
8 ounces salami, chopped
4 ounces provolone cheese, chopped
8 ounces pepperoncini peppers
1 head bibb lettuce
1 bunch arugula
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler.
  • In large skillet over medium-high heat with 1 turn of the pan of olive oil, brown the ground sirloin (about 5-6 minutes).
  • Add the onion and cook another 3-4 minutes, until the onions start to get tender.
  • Stir in the steak sauce and beef stock, season with salt and pepper, bring up to a bubble and cook about 2 minutes.
  • Split open rolls and toast under broiler.
  • While the meat is cooking, melt the butter in a medium-size skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Stir in the flour and cook about 1 minute.
  • Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and let thicken, about 2 minutes.
  • Turn off heat and stir the cheese in a figure-eight motion until it is all incorporated.
  • In a salad bowl, toss the salami, cheese, pepperoncini, Bibb lettuce and arugula with the olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • To serve, place a scoopful of the meat mixture onto the bottom of the rolls, then top with the cheese sauce and replace the top of the roll. Serve the salad alongside.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOES

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes image

All the taste of the famous sandwich but made easy using ground beef and an optional homemade provolone cheese sauce. In a pinch, you can use sliced provolone cheese or cheez whiz instead.

Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3 tablespoons steak sauce, I like A-1
1/2 cup beef broth
salt and black pepper, to taste
1 dash Worcestershire sauce (optional)
4 large hamburger buns
1 tablespoon butter, for toasting buns
provolone cheese (sliced) or Cheez Whiz
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup provolone cheese (shredded)

Steps:

  • Add the oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook 5-6 minutes or until no longer pink. Add the onion and bell pepper and continue to cook 2-3 minutes or until crisp tender. Drain off any fat. Stir in the steak sauce and beef broth (and Worcestershire, if using). Season with salt and pepper. Cook until liquid is gone.
  • Butter the cut sides of the buns. Toast the buttered sides in a hot skillet on medium-high heat. Set aside.
  • To make the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a 1-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk in the flour and cook about 1 minute. Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  • To serve, place a scoop of the meat mixture onto the bottom half of the buns. Top with cheese sauce (or cheese) and cover with the top half of the bun.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLOPPY JOE

Provided by Katie Lee Biegel

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
1 yellow onion, diced
1/2 green bell pepper, roughly diced
1/2 red bell pepper, roughly diced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup beef stock
5 ounces provolone cheese (7 to 8 slices)
4 to 6 potato hamburger buns, buttered and toasted
Pickled banana peppers, for serving
Sweet potato fries, for serving

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet with a lid over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it up with the back of a wooden spoon. Sprinkle the Worcestershire, granulated garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and some pepper over the beef. Cook, stirring and breaking the beef up frequently, until it is no longer pink and develops a deep brown crust, about 6 minutes. Add the onion and bell peppers. Add the butter and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions and peppers are softened and browning on the edges, about 5 minutes. There should also be browning forming on the bottom of the skillet. Pour the stock into the skillet, a little at a time, scraping up any browned bits. Bring everything to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium, cover and cook until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly, 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and lay the cheese slices directly onto the beef mixture in a single layer. Cover and let the cheese melt completely, about 1 minute. Stir the cheese to slightly incorporate. Scoop the meat and cheese onto the buns and top with banana peppers. Serve with fries.
